Spring 2024 Petitioning Group Announcement

Brothers – 

On behalf of the National Council, we are excited to announce that we have approved four petitioning groups for the Spring 2024 semester. 

In the Northeast District, we are excited to welcome back the Theta Psi Chapter at Virginia Union University. Under the direction of Professor Fayesha L. Cousins,

the Virginia Union band program is home to the ‘Ambassadors of Sound.’ To learn more about the Morehouse College music program, please visit their website. Notes of congratulations can be sent to Prof. Cousins at: flcousins@vuu.edu 

The Theta Psi Petitioning Group will be advised by members of the α-cohort of the Friend and Advocate Initiative and includes:

  • Michael Bradford-Calhoun from the Iota Zeta Chapter
  • Ed Savoy from the Eta Alpha Chapter
  • Ema Ashley from the Eta Sigma Chapter
  • Dr. William Lake from the Gamma Xi Chapter
  • Franklin Nesmith from the Eta Omega

In our Southeast District, we are welcoming three Petitioning Groups this semester at Austin Peay State University, Bethune Cookman University, and Claflin University. 

Our Petitioning Group at Austin Peay is our only brand new Charter this semester; thus, upon the completion of the Petitioning Group process, they will be the Xi Eta Chapter. 

Austin Peay State University is under the guidance of Director of Bands Dr. Wolynec and is home to numerous ensembles including the ‘Governors Own Marching Band.’ More information about their music program can be found here and notes of congratulations can be sent to WolynecG@apsu.edu. Akin to our other groups, this Petitioning Group is  advised by members of the α-cohort of the Friend and Advocate Initiative and includes:

  • Hunter Moreland from the Kappa Mu Chapter
  • Jahkeem Grant from the Iota Xi Chapter
  • Miaka Kemp from the Kappa Mu Chapter
  • Megan Lefever from the Lambda Delta Chapter

We are also excited to be returning back to the Eta Iota Chapter at Bethune Cookman University. Bethune Cookman is home to the Marching Wildcats, often known as “The Pride.” Under the direction of Dr. Wells, the Bethune Cookman band program and more information can be found on their website while notes of congratulations can be sent to wellsd@cookman.edu. The members of the α-cohort of the Friend and Advocate Initiative who are advising this group include:

  • Anthony ‘Tony’ Shelton from the Nu Kappa Chapter
  • Hayden Elias-Rodriguez from the Gamma Nu Chapter
  • Jessica Needham from the Eta Sigma Chapter
  • Danielle Wade from the Mu Beta Chapter
  • Benjamin Williams from the Delta Iota Chapter

Last but not least on our list is a recharter of the Kappa Pi Chapter at Claflin University. Under the direction of Prof. Thomas Hollins, the Panther Pep Band and various ensembles aim to provide a flexible career-oriented education to accommodate students’ career options.   • Franklin Johnson-Norwood from the Zeta Psi Chapter
  • Dr. Donald Lee Jr. from the Zeta Eta Chapter

  • Brittany Woodruff  from the Pi Chapter
