OCTOBER UPDATES

Update #1: Chapter Personnel Report

My heartfelt thanks to each chapter that has promptly submitted their Chapter Personnel Reports (CPR), chapter fees, and membership dues. Your proactive efforts set a strong foundation for our collective success! For semester based chapters that missed the September 30, 2024, deadline, I urge you to submit your documents to National Headquarters as soon as possible. The deadline for quarter schools remains on October 15, 2024. For detailed guidance, please reference the Fall 2024 Informational Mailer, specifically slides 11-19.

If you encounter any challenges, our National Headquarters stands ready to assist you. Please remember:

• Payment Issues: If your online payment is declined, contact your bank immediately, as large transactions can sometimes trigger security alerts.
• Member Acknowledgements: Ensure that all members have completed their acknowledgements before submission to avoid a 10% late fee.
• Approval Processes: Give your Chapter Sponsor and Director of Bands adequate time to review and approve your reports. Rushed approvals do not support sustainable chapter practices.

Update #2: November National Month of Musicianship

November will be our National Month of Musicianship, a dedicated time for us to celebrate and showcase the rich musical talents within Kappa Kappa Psi and our band programs. According to research from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), students who engage in music education are often more cooperative with teachers and peers, have more self-confidence, and are better able to express themselves. With these benefits in mind, let’s use November to not only perform but also to reflect on the profound impact that music has on our lives and communities.

Whether it’s through a heartfelt rendition of our Fraternity Hymn, sharing personal stories of how music has shaped your life, or promoting your band programs, each activity you choose is a testament to the excellence and dedication prevalent within our chapters. As you prepare for this celebratory month, consider the following reflective questions to enhance your appreciation and understanding of your musical journey:

• How has participating in band and Kappa Kappa Psi influenced my personal and academic growth?
• What memorable experiences have I gained through music that I would not have encountered otherwise?
• In what ways can I further contribute to promoting musicianship within my community?

Update #3: 28th Annual Collegiate Marching Band Festival

I am thrilled to announce that Kappa Kappa Psi will host a booth at the 2024 Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown on October 6th. I will personally be there to support and cheer for all the bands, with a special cheer for our Brothers in the field. It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate our shared passion for music. This event also serves as an excellent precursor to our National Month of Musicianship, helping us gear up for even more musical celebrations. For more details about the schedule and our specific activities at the festival, please visit their website. Also, keep an eye on our social media accounts for updates and information about when and where we will be gathering to sing together.

We are currently working on plans to attend the 2025 Honda Battle of the Bands in Los Angeles, a premier event that showcases the incredible talent and spirit of HBCU marching bands from across the nation. As we aim to support and celebrate these musical showcases, we encourage our members and alumni to suggest other major band events where Kappa Kappa Psi’s presence could amplify our impact and visibility. Engaging with these events not only strengthens our network but also provides unparalleled opportunities for our members to experience the breadth of musicianship and fellowship that the band community offers. Your input is invaluable as we continue to plan our involvement in these enriching musical activities. Update #4: Upcoming Live Streams

Arupa, our National Vice President for Student Affairs, is hosting a VPSA Chat on October 15th to help us prepare for the National Month of Musicianship! Additionally, another livestream is planned to highlight our National Vice President for Membership & Expansion, Dr. Nicholas Rorrer, along with our Expansion Committee. This session will focus on the petitioning and expansion process, providing valuable insights for anyone interested in (re)chartering a chapter on their campus. It’s an excellent opportunity for anyone interested to learn about the steps involved and engage directly with national leadership on best practices for expansion.

Following this, another VPSA Chat is scheduled for November, which will concentrate on the audition process for our 2025 National Intercollegiate Band, featuring insights from our National Vice President for Professional Relations, Dr. William Lake, Jr (ΚΚΨ) and Dr. LaToya Webb (ΤΒΣ). These sessions are invaluable for staying informed and engaged with Kappa Kappa Psi’s activities, offering both a deep dive into specific areas of our operations and the chance to interact with our national leaders. Your participation in our Member Feedback Surveys is crucial for ensuring that your voice is heard and acted upon. Each survey is designed with a clear and specific purpose, directly influencing our National Council’s ability to create meaningful and intentional changes that enhance the fraternity experience for all. These surveys are pivotal in driving the growth and strengthening the foundations of Kappa Kappa Psi. We encourage every member to take these opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction and continuous improvement of our organization.

It has been truly inspiring to see the outstanding work and dedication from our chapters across the country. Your efforts are a testament to the strength and spirit of Kappa Kappa Psi.

SEPTEMBER UPDATES

***Special Highlight: Congratulations to our KKPsi Brothers and all Participating Bands at the 2024 National Battle of the Bands

Before we dive into this month’s updates, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible performances at the 2024 National Battle of the Bands in Houston, TX. To all the participating bands, especially our Brothers who proudly represented Kappa Kappa Psi on the field and in the stands—you made us all proud with your dedication, musicianship, and spirit.

On behalf of the Kappa Kappa Psi National Council, we are honored to have awarded each participating band a certificate of appreciation. This is our way of expressing our deepest gratitude and pride in these programs for their continued promotion of music and the band experience. Your efforts continue to inspire and uplift us all. Thank you for showcasing the transformative power of music through your performances and support!

Update #1: Chapter Personnel Report

As we start the school year, it’s crucial to ensure that your chapter’s paperwork is in order, including the timely submission of your Chapter Personnel Report (CPR), Chapter Fee, and Membership Dues. The CPR is more than just a formality—it’s a key component in maintaining accurate records and ensuring your chapter’s operations run smoothly. Before beginning the CPR, we strongly recommend that each member log into their OPUS account to verify and update their personal information, such as name, email address, and mailing address. Accurate data entry at this stage helps avoid delays and ensures everyone stays informed.

Remember, the CPR must be submitted by September 30th for semester-based schools and by October 15 for quarter-based schools, including all required fees, signatures, and approval from your Director of Bands (DOB)/Chapter Sponsor. Remember, that an on-time CPR is one of your first opportunities to complete one of your Chapter Crown Pearl Goals! Missing these deadlines will result in additional late fees and potential disciplinary action. For detailed guidance, please reference the Fall 2024 Informational Mailer, specifically slides 11-19.

Update 2: September Opportunities to Meet Your Crown Pearl Goals

As announced in our town hall at District Conventions, our last newsletter, and Slide 22 of the Fall 2024 Informational Mailer, we are excited to launch the Crown Pearl Goals for this year. During the Month of Service, your Chapter will have three opportunities to achieve a Crown Pearl Goal which include:

• Turning your Chapter’s CPR in on time with all dues paid
• Submitting your Chapters Road-to-Wisdom Calendar (Calendar and Activity Review)
• Highlight a service project your Chapter does

For the last crown pearl goal, our programs committee will be rolling out a Service Spotlight shortly. Additionally, remember that some goals will require more planning and are achievable at the end of the semester or year. Here are some friendly suggestions to help reach some of the other goals:

• Meet monthly with your DOB and/or Sponsor
  • Consider asking your DOB and/or Sponsor for a selfie at every visit and importantly write down Chapter action items from these meetings
• Initiate at least five members
  • Develop a recruitment plan as a Chapter with multiple types of and dates for recruitment events. Make a list of band members who would make a great addition to your Chapter!
• Fundraise 5% more
  • Document how much money your Chapter brought in last year from fundraising, even if that number was low! Develop a plan to continue your successful fundraising endeavors alongside ways that your Chapter can either grow these existing activities or start new activities

More information on the Crown Pearl Goals will follow in subsequent months, including a logo and submission form for some of the additional goals. Although we only highlighted some goals here, remember there are still others that your Chapter can do to become a “Crown Pearl Chapter” by achieving 10 of the 15 Crown Pearl Goals.

While you’re focused on chapter reports, don’t miss out on the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills through our September CHOP SHOPS! These workshops, presented by the National Committee on Chapter Operations, are designed to empower all Active members, particularly those in or aspiring to leadership positions. The workshops offer practical insights and strategies that are vital for success in your roles.

Update #4: Fall 2024 Petitioning Groups

On behalf of the National Council, Dr. Rorrer and I are thrilled to announce that we have two new petitioning groups starting this fall. Please join us in welcoming Edward Waters University (SED) and the University of Central Missouri (MWD) as they embark on their #KappaKappaPsiJourney to become fully chartered chapters. This is an exciting time for both institutions, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on their respective campuses and the fraternity as a whole.

Additionally, we invite our alumni members to engage with these new groups through our Friend & Advocate Initiative. This program offers alumni the chance to provide personalized support to chapters across the country, regardless of their status. By participating, you’ll gain access to the latest resources like the Road to Wisdom and Chapter Operations materials, helping to guide and strengthen these emerging groups. This chat is an excellent chance for both new and experienced members to gain valuable insights into making service a cornerstone of your chapter’s activities. Update #7: National Hazing Prevention Week

Last month, the CFRs and I had the honor of representing Kappa Kappa Psi at the 2024 Hazing Prevention Institute in Indianapolis, IN. During this event, we joined organizations and campus leaders from across the country to address the ongoing challenge of hazing, review the latest legal developments, and strategize on ways to strengthen our prevention efforts. Our commitment to hazing prevention remains unwavering, and we are dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for all our members.

As part of this commitment, we are proud to support National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW), taking place from September 23-27. Organized by the Hazing Prevention Network, NHPW is a time for communities, institutions, and organizations to come together and raise awareness about the dangers of hazing. We encourage all members—Actives, Alumni, Directors, and Sponsors—to join us in this important cause. Let’s make a concerted effort to engage in meaningful discussions, educate ourselves and others, and advocate for a hazing-free culture. It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of one of our Past National Presidents and beloved Brothers, Dr. Lemuel Berry, Jr. As we come together to celebrate his life and legacy, we recognize his profound impact on Kappa Kappa Psi and beyond.

Dr. Lemuel Berry, Jr. (Delta Alpha), served as the Director of Bands at Langston University and was elected National President at the 32nd Biennial Convention at Texas Tech University in 1983. During his time as President and Vice President, Dr. Berry’s leadership led to the formation of fifteen new petitioning groups (previously known as “colonies”) and the installation of seven chapters. His contributions to our fraternity were vast, including directing the national trust fund drive, initiating the first campus visitation program, and producing the first Kappa Kappa Psi Commissioned Band Composition Directory and Fund Raising Brochure. Under his guidance, the national organization developed a model Membership Education Program, which became an essential guide for both petitioning groups and existing chapters. Dr. Berry also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the “A. Frank Martin Award,” honoring music professionals for their significant regional contributions, and was instrumental in upgrading the National Office’s operations with its first computer. His term culminated in the 33rd Biennial Convention in 1985 at the University of Kansas, where the National Intercollegiate Band premiered James Barnes’ Chorale Prelude: ‘Mein junges Leben hat ein End’, Op 61, under the esteemed direction of Dr. William P. Foster and the support of host conductor Robert E. Foster.

As we reflect on Dr. Berry’s enduring contributions to Kappa Kappa Psi and the broader academic and musical communities, we are reminded of the profound legacy he leaves behind. Past National President Ken Corbett has written an insightful article for the Fall 2024 Podium dedicated to honoring Dr. Berry’s legacy and the impact he made on those who had the privilege of knowing him. Below is an excerpt from PNP Corbett’s tribute, which captures the essence of Dr. Berry’s life and his remarkable journey:

“Born October 11, 1946, in Oneonta, NY, Dr. Berry grew up in Burlington, NJ before attending college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Livingstone College and a Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Music Education from the University of Iowa. 

His expansive academic career as a professor and administrator included positions as Dean, of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, at Virginia State University; Dean of Humanities & Fine Arts, at Mercy College; Dean, at Caudill College of Humanities, at Morehead State University; and finally, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of New England. 

He wrote more than 200 articles on music, education, and many topics in between and published books on Black musical artists, including Great African American Musicians from Marian Anderson to Stevie Wonder in 2010. The Phoenix Settlement – A National Heritage Site is scheduled for publication in 2024 followed by the 2025 publication of the Encyclopedia of Who’s Who in Black Gospel Music. 

On a personal level, I remember the many Stillwater meetings and trips to Oklahoma City for dinner with KKPs Psi Board of Trustees members Hugh McMillen, David Oakley, and Don Stanley. A very learning moment for me at my young fraternity age.”

I am excited to share an important update regarding the vacancy in our SED Governor Corps!

In selecting our next SED Governor, I sought someone who would complement the existing Governor Team of Kalem and JP, work effectively with the District Council, and bring a unique blend of energy, excitement, and experience. After months of thoughtful discussions and searching, I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Danielle “Dani” Wade as our new Southeast District Governor!

Dani is a Life Member of the Mu Beta Chapter at Florida Atlantic University, where she was initiated on March 29, 2009. At FAU, her involvement included the Marching Owls, Parliament Sound Pep Band, and Symphony Band. She served in various chapter roles, including Alumni Secretary and Vice President of Programs. At the district level, Dani served as the Southeast District Central Regional Representative, traveling extensively to support chapters and promote fraternal engagement.

Since graduating, Dani has continued her dedication to music and band as President of the FAU Marching Owls Alumni Association, creating a supportive environment for current and former members. She has also been a founding Board member and Membership Chair for the Southeast District Alumni Association and has actively participated in national and alumni committees, workshop facilitation, and as a Petitioning Group Advisor.

Dani exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding leader and Brother. Her dedication to setting a clear example of her own #KKPsiJourney and inspiring future generations of district and national leaders is truly commendable. I am confident that her passion and experience will have a profound impact on the Southeast District and on Kappa Kappa Psi as a whole.

As summer begins to wind down and the new academic year approaches, it’s time to turn our thoughts to the exciting season ahead. For many of us, the transition from the leisurely days of summer to the more structured cadence of the school year brings a renewed sense of purpose. Band camps are kicking off, schedules are filling up, and the rhythm of our lives picks up pace once more.

One of the most crucial aspects of this transition is our focus on membership recruitment and retention. As we move into the latter half of the biennium, we have a unique opportunity to meet and even surpass our membership goals. For the 2024-2025 academic year, we aim to start with at least 4,000 Active members, and by the end of this academic year , we hope to welcome at least 2,000 new initiates into our fraternity. I share these numbers with you to be transparent about our goals and to emphasize the collective effort required to achieve them. With your support and initiative, I am confident that not only will we witness a positive trend in our membership, but we will also surpass our targets. Remember the influence you hold as a member of our Brotherhood. From one-on-one conversations to actively inviting interested band members to your recruitment events, your efforts have the power to strengthen Kappa Kappa Psi in ways you might not have imagined.

While these goals and metrics serve as valuable benchmarks for our success, it’s essential to remember that our primary objective is to engage and inspire both current and potential members in a meaningful way. Chapters should enter the new year with a clear and actionable plan for fostering connections, building a supportive community, and creating an inclusive environment where all members can thrive. Of course, if you find yourself needing guidance in this area, please do not hesitate to reach out to your district and national leadership for help. We are here to support you!

AUGUST UPDATES

Update #1: Recruitment and Officer Training Workshops

We are thrilled to announce a comprehensive set of training sessions designed to support our chapters in their recruitment efforts and officer responsibilities. Presented by our National Committee on Curriculum Development and our National Committee on Chapter Operations, these workshops throughout August are tailored to equip all Active members, particularly those in or aspiring to leadership positions, with the skills and knowledge necessary for success.

Membership Recruitment and Chapter Vice President of Membership (VPM) training sessions will provide invaluable insights into effective strategies for engaging potential members. A well-thought-out engagement plan is crucial not only for attracting new members but also for ensuring their retention by making them feel valued and included. Workshops will cover everything from initial outreach to creating a welcoming environment for new members. By attending these sessions, participants will be better prepared to face the challenges of recruitment and retention with confidence and clarity.

Additionally, our Chapter Officer training sessions are designed to help current and aspiring officers plan ahead and prioritize their responsibilities. Effective leadership starts with preparation and awareness, and these workshops will guide officers in setting achievable goals and understanding their roles. This proactive approach will ensure that you are ready to face the new year with confidence and clarity. Update #2: Crown Pearl Goals

The National Council is excited to launch our new engagement model, The Crown Pearl Goals. This initiative provides chapters and brothers with specific goals to strive for and methods to engage with the national vision, plan, and requirements. Detailed information about The Crown Pearl Goals will be included in our Fall 2024 Informational Mailer. This model is designed to help us all align our efforts and work together towards our shared objectives, fostering a stronger and more united brotherhood.

These SMART/SMARTIE goals aim to help us grow collectively as an organization and Chapters that complete 10 out of the 15 goals will be recognized as “Crown Pearl Chapters.” The goals for 2024-2025 are divided into three categories:

CHOPs Goals: Chapters are required to submit their Chapter Personnel Report with all dues paid on time, submit their Chapter’s Road to Wisdom Calendar, and turn in the Initiate Reporting Form with dues paid promptly. Additionally, chapters must complete their Spring Activity Report on time and invite their district leadership team to a chapter meeting, which can be conducted virtually.

Strive for Five Goals: Chapters should highlight a service project they have completed, participate in the Month of Musicianship, and attend Founders Circle programming. They are also encouraged to send brothers to their 2025 District Convention and submit their Graduating Senior Report.

Growth Goals: Chapters are encouraged to meet monthly with their Director of Bands or Sponsor, initiate at least five new members, and increase their fundraising efforts by 5%. Additionally, they should host a band social and intentionally interact with a chapter outside their own.

Update#3: Chapter Resource Folders and Continued CFR Office Hours

Over the summer Vice President of Membership and Expansion Dr. Rorrer has been working with our new Chapter Field Representatives (CFRs), Ari Wright and Mason Thomas, to develop resources to help our Chapters. As part of this, we have started by compiling all of our resources into one common location, the Chapter Resource Google Drive. This drive is organized so you can find resources by subject or by office. As we continue to develop resources we will update this drive so that you all have access to the best resources you need to succeed as a Chapter.

If you are still looking for more Chapter support, we encourage you all to schedule a ‘Chapter Office Hour’ with our CFRs. These office hours can be used for whatever your Chapter needs, be it helping with planning, talking through recruitment plans, or understanding OPUS. Update#4: National Committee Updates & Interest Form

Throughout the first year of the biennium, our national committees have accomplished remarkable work, and we owe a great deal of gratitude to the dedicated volunteers who have made this possible. Their efforts have been instrumental in driving our initiatives forward and ensuring that we remain aligned with our mission and values. However, we also recognize that committee members may need to step away due to changes in availability and capacity. This ebb and flow is a natural part of our organization’s dynamic.

With this understanding, I am excited to announce the launch of our 2024-2025 National Committee Interest Form. If you are passionate about contributing to the growth and success of Kappa Kappa Psi, I encourage you to consider serving on one of our national committees. This is an excellent opportunity to engage with the fraternity on a deeper level, collaborate with like-minded brothers, and make a meaningful impact. As part of our transition to OPUS, we have begun decommissioning our old listserv platform and integrating those mailing lists into OPUS. Unfortunately, due to the design of the old system, we were unable to migrate any unsubscribe requests. Going forward, at the bottom of each email from our new platform, you will have the option to unsubscribe from the list. You can also manage your subscriptions by visiting the Email Preferences Center through the “Update Subscription Preferences” link at the bottom of each email.

JULY UPDATES

Update #1: One Year Down, Another Year Ahead

As we conclude our first year of the biennium and look towards the next, it’s essential to reflect on our achievements and the challenges we’ve encountered along the way. This past year, our fraternity started with a membership base of 3615 Active members, marking a 5.7% decrease from the previous year and falling short of our budgeted target of 4,000 Active members. This reduction in membership size has, as expected, led to a decrease in funding, necessitating some adjustments to our operating expenses.

Despite these challenges, we have initiated at least 1690 new Brothers (with 230 still pending paperwork updates) bringing us close to our goal for 2023-2024! While this number is below our target of 1,900 new members, the efforts and dedication displayed by our chapters in their recruitment and retention endeavors are commendable and truly appreciated. The financial implications of not meeting our recruitment targets have also prompted us to make careful adjustments to our budget. This ensures that we continue to be responsible and strategic with our funds, while still investing in our staff, students, expansion efforts, and partnerships.

Looking ahead to Year 2, we are optimistic about our potential for growth. Our goal is to see at least 4,000 members returning as Actives and to welcome at least 2,000 new Brothers into the Brotherhood. Achieving these targets will not only stabilize our funding but also strengthen our community and enhance the fraternal experience for all members.

Update #2: Month of Celebration Success

As we reflect on the success of our Month of Celebration, I am filled with gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by our community! Through our Five Dollar Friday campaign, we received over 45 gifts, collectively raising crucial funds that will significantly enhance our National Intercollegiate Band, bolster student scholarships, and support various national initiatives and chapter needs. This financial support is crucial, especially as we continue to navigate the economic challenges post-pandemic and rebuild stronger financial foundations for our Fraternity.

The past year has been one of careful fiscal management. The National Council has taken a conservative approach to our spending, cutting major expenses to ensure our Fraternity remains in a safer financial position amidst these turbulent times. Update #4: Summer Council Meetings & National Leadership Conference

July will be a busy month for us as we gear up for our annual Summer Council Meetings & National Leadership Conference, scheduled to take place from July 9 through July 14 in Stillwater, OK! This annual gathering is an important event where the National Council and Board of Trustees come together to evaluate our progress over the previous quarter, assess the current state of the Fraternity, and strategize for the upcoming quarter to ensure continued growth and productivity.

This year, we are particularly excited to return to Stillwater and be in person with our National Headquarters Staff. The staff has been exceptional, maintaining smooth operations at HQ despite the absence of an Executive Director. Their dedication and efficiency have been crucial in keeping our Fraternity’s administrative heart beating strongly! I’d like to share a heartfelt “thank you” to our entire staff!

The National Council meetings from July 9 to July 11 will focus on these evaluations and strategic discussions. Following these important meetings, we will transition into our National Leadership Conference (NLC) on the evening of July 11. Dr. Rorrer has been diligently preparing a comprehensive digital onboarding and training process for all district leadership teams. This preparation is designed to equip them with the tools and knowledge necessary for the upcoming academic year. During the NLC, District Governors and a student officer representative from each district will travel to Stillwater where they will collaborate with our National Leadership Team to develop a clear and actionable plan to engage and guide their respective districts. This collaborative effort will ensure that our leaders are well-prepared to support their chapters and foster a productive and enriching environment throughout the fraternity.

Given the importance of these strategic gatherings, we highly encourage each chapter to conduct their own visioning and strategy planning meeting during the summer months to prepare for the upcoming year. These meetings are crucial for setting goals, aligning with the Fraternity’s objectives, and ensuring a strong start to the academic year. If you need assistance with organizing or conducting these meetings, please do not hesitate to reach out to our CFRs or your district leadership team.

As I close out another newsletter and look towards the second half of this biennium, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our Brothers who have continuously shown incredible dedication and support. The journey we’ve embarked on together, especially in the wake of the challenges, has not been without its hurdles. Yet, through it all, the unwavering commitment of our volunteers, alumni, and students has been a beacon of hope and resilience.

The sacrifices and contributions of each member have been instrumental in stabilizing our fraternity during these uncertain times. Your efforts have ensured that we not only maintain but also build upon the legacy of Kappa Kappa Psi. It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of one of our Past National Presidents and beloved Brothers, Dr. Robert C. Fleming. As we come together to celebrate his life and legacy, we recognize his profound impact on Kappa Kappa Psi and beyond.

Dr. Robert C. Fleming (Beta Omicron), Associate Director of Bands at Arizona State University, served as National President from 1987 to 1989. During his tenure, he emphasized internal expansion and fiscal responsibility, initiated the 15% convention travel account, and encouraged alumni to become sustaining members. He also played a pivotal role in selecting a new Executive Director and implementing alcohol awareness and hazing policies. His leadership saw the first commissioning of compositions for both National Intercollegiate Bands and the enhancement of annual district conventions. The impact of Dr. Fleming’s work extends far beyond this brief message, touching countless lives within and outside of Kappa Kappa Psi. His contributions to the Fraternity and the broader music community are profound and enduring.

Recognizing the significance of personal reflections and stories that illuminate the essence of his influence on Kappa Kappa Psi, I asked Past National President Ken Corbett to share his personal experiences with Dr. Fleming and the impact that he had on him as a Brother and leader of our Fraternity.

“Bob Fleming, my friend and Brother, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024. I was able to visit Coach as he was known on Saturday, June 1 in Phoenix. He was suffering from organ failure and was on hospice care. We had a great visit and talked about his beautiful family and earlier fraternity days. 

Bob and I served on the Kappa Kappa Psi National Council from 1983-1991 and the Board through 2003. I was only 29 years old and Bob was my mentor and great friend. We selected a new Executive Director together, David Solomon. I worked with Bob on many projects for the Fraternity and was so happy he was a great teacher and leader. I clearly remember the council meeting we had in his home in Tempe, AZ. Brenda was such a great host, and we had a really productive time together. Coach, you are missed, and your legacy will remain part of the Arizona State University Band program and Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity.”

June marks our National Month of Celebration, an opportunity to come together and recognize the hard work and achievements of the past year. It’s a time to celebrate our accomplishments, set new goals, and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead. As we kick off summer, let’s harness the positivity of the season to fuel our enthusiasm for the second half of this biennium and beyond.

In the spirit of celebration, I invite us all to reflect on the values that unite us and the vibrant diversity that strengthens our Brotherhood. As we honor the resilience and beauty of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and participate in our chapter or individual celebrations, let us do so with a sense of purpose and unity. Our shared values and mutual support are the foundation of our community, and June is the perfect time to reaffirm these bonds and give back.

Update #1: National Month of Celebration

June marks our National Month of Celebration, an essential part of this biennium’s vision and plan. This month, we reflect on the past academic year and celebrate our progress and achievements as individuals, chapters, districts, and as a Fraternity. It’s a time to recognize how far we’ve come on #TheKappaKappaPsiJourney and to set new goals for the second half of the biennium.

As we look ahead, what are your personal, professional, academic, and fraternal aspirations? What new skills or experiences do you want to explore? How can you contribute to Kappa Kappa Psi’s growth and success, and your own?

Personally, I aim to spend more time with friends and family, visit my family in Asia before the end of 2024, and commit to healthier lifestyle choices. Professionally, I plan to pursue further education and professional development opportunities while strengthening relationships with colleagues. Fraternally, I will focus on supporting our Actives and Alumni, ensuring purposeful programming, and preparing our leadership for upcoming conventions and transitions. Take a moment to think about your ambitions and the steps you can take to reach them as you continue own your own growth journey.

Update #2: National Vice President for Student Affairs

In the spirit of celebration, it is with great enthusiasm that the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi announces the appointment of Arupa Gopal-Campbell as our next National Vice President for Student Affairs!

Arupa is a Life Member of the Kappa Tau Chapter at the University of South Florida, where she was initiated in the Spring of 2004. During her time as an active member, she served as Chapter President and Vice President of Membership, and represented her chapter at District and National conventions. Arupa holds dual majors in Music and Management from USF and a Master of Arts in Performing Arts Administration from New York University. She has extensive experience in fraternity leadership, including serving as Southeast District Governor from 2018 to 2024 and as the Chapter Sponsor for Kappa Tau. 

We announced this search in February 2024 and invited applications until the end of April. We are grateful for the deep and diverse pool of candidates who showed the courage to put their names forward. Our focus was on finding the best fit for our team, someone with the skills and experience to hit the ground running.  Arupa stood out due to her extensive experience as a chapter sponsor and Southeast District Governor. Additionally, her background in non-profit and arts management will be invaluable as we navigate changes at our National Headquarters.

Update #3: End-of-Year Checklist

As we close our Year 1 of this biennium, please ensure timely submission of all required chapter reports and payments. These reports are crucial for evaluating chapters’ achievements and eligibility for the William Scroggs Founders’ Trophy at the 2025 National Convention. If you have any questions or need support, please reach out to our HQ staff at kkytbs@kkytbs.org. You can also submit a Chapter Assistance Request.

• Membership Candidate Registration (MCR) Form: Due within 7 days following First Degree and before you can start the IRF.
• Initiate Registration Form (IRF): Due within 30 days following Third Degree. After 30 days, a late fee will apply!  Initiation fees should be collected prior to performing Third Degree.
• Officer & Chapter Update Form: Due as soon as after elections are finalized
• Graduating Senior Report (GSR): Due within 30 days of graduation

As we celebrate this month, I want to focus on our shared value of Love. Love is the foundation that strengthens our Brotherhood and fuels our dedication to Kappa Kappa Psi. This month, I invite you to reflect on what Love means to you. How do you like to receive love from others? How do you show love to those around you? Think about your love for music, leadership, service, brotherhood, and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Consider how Love can make each of us, and our Fraternity, stronger. How can you incorporate Love into your day-to-day life? How can you show more Love to your Brothers? How can you contribute to our Fraternity with Love?

For me, it’s my love for Kappa Kappa Psi, my journey as a leader and Brother, and each of you that powers my drive to continue my service, even through difficult and dark times. Let’s harness the power of Love to inspire our actions and uplift our Brotherhood. Together, we can pave a brighter path on The Kappa Kappa Psi Journey by leading with Love in everything we do.

As April gives way to May, we find ourselves at a juncture of renewal and promise, an ideal moment to cultivate personal and communal growth. The very name of May derives from the Latin word maius, associated with growth and springtime. True to its definition, May invites us to foster new beginnings and to deepen our appreciation for the vibrant beauty within our fraternity and communities. This month, we observe and honor several significant cultural and social milestones: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, showing appreciation on Mother’s Day, and paying tribute to our fallen heroes on Memorial Day.

As the cadence of the academic year slows down, we have a valuable opportunity to reflect on our recent achievements and reassess for the future. This period of reflection is not just a pause but a vital preparation for the rewards of tomorrow as we approach our Month of Celebration in June. Let’s use this time to rejuvenate our spirits, strengthen our bonds, and prepare ourselves for the joyful celebrations that lie ahead. With that said, please take the time to review the updates and highlights for this month.

This semester, we have the great pleasure of welcoming four new chapters into our Fraternity. Update #2: Reminder on Chapter Reports & Payments

As the school year draws to a close, please ensure timely submission of all required chapter reports and payments. These reports are crucial for evaluating chapters’ achievements and eligibility for the William Scroggs Founders’ Trophy at the 2025 National Convention. If you have any questions or need support, please reach out to our HQ staff at kkytbs@kkytbs.org. You can also submit a Chapter Assistance Request.

• Membership Candidate Registration (MCR) Form: Due within 7 days following First Degree and before you can start the IRF.
• Initiate Registration Form (IRF): Due within 30 days following Third Degree. After 30 days, a late fee will apply!  Initiation fees should be collected prior to performing Third Degree.
• Officer & Chapter Update Form: Due as soon as after elections are finalized
• Graduating Senior Report (GSR): Due within 30 days of graduation
• Spring Activity Report (SAR): Due by June 1

To further support our chapters and chapter officers, the National Committee on Chapter Operations will be hosting a Chapter Officer Transition Workshop on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 PM CT. This workshop is open to ALL Active Brothers and is particularly crucial for current and aspiring chapter officers. It’s an excellent opportunity to gain valuable insights into effective chapter management and leadership transition strategies. Update #5: District Conventions Recap

This Spring, our District Conventions were nothing short of spectacular, drawing over 2,000 Brothers and Sisters together to celebrate both organizations’ missions and purposes. I am proud to share the remarkable attendance at each event: 

• Northeast District Convention – 482 attendees
• Southeast District Convention –  566 attendees
• North Central District Convention – 316 attendees
• Southwest District Convention – 424 attendees
• Midwest District Convention – 219 attendees
• Western District Convention – 123 attendees

Each convention was filled with robust discussions, enriching workshops, and spirited fellowship. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the district leadership teams for their hard work and dedication. Their efforts not only facilitated successful events but also helped create lifelong memories and connections that span the country. Thank you for your part in strengthening our Brotherhood and inspiring all of us to elevate our commitment to our ideals and mission!

Update #6: June – National Month of Celebration

Looking ahead, June is designated as our National Month of Celebration. This special month is an opportunity for all chapters and members to celebrate our achievements, honor our history, and reinforce the ties that bind us. Please plan to participate in activities that highlight the joy, the commitment, and the vibrant spirit of our fraternity. Be on the lookout for more details at the end of this month!

In closing, I would like to express how incredibly proud I am of all our Brothers, both Active and Alumni. Throughout this biennium, you have all demonstrated unwavering dedication and a steadfast commitment to our fraternal values. Managing the changes and challenges of leading our national organization, alongside my personal commitments, has been a profound journey of growth and inspiration, largely due to your influence. Your support and guidance have been invaluable to me, and I am truly a better person because of your love and encouragement. Every call, message, interaction, and point of connection has been a source of strength for me. It’s your support that has carried me through to this day. 

With your continued engagement and support, I remain committed to leading Kappa Kappa Psi toward a brighter future and upholding the standards that make us all proud to be part of The Kappa Kappa Psi Journey.
