This September, Kappa Kappa Psi is calling all Brothers to help celebrate the National Month of Service! We want to see Active Chapters and Local Alumni Associations show us a day in the life of Brothers serving college and university bands across the country. Any and all service projects are welcome. Uniform sorting, instrument cleaning, concert chair setups, field paint lining, fundraisers for the band, promoting upcoming performances — we want to see anything and everything no matter how big or small.
Also, in special recognition of Bohumil Makovsky’s 148th Birthday, September 23rd is designated as our National Day of Service. To celebrate this day, we encourage Brothers to host new service projects and celebrate the legacy of Boh, our Founder and Guiding Spirit.
Throughout the month, the National Leadership Team will share photos, videos, and highlight great stories shared with us by our Brothers. With much excitement, we also present for the first time a Service Hours Dashboard that will allow everyone to see at various levels how each Chapter and District is getting involved in September.
How to Participate
Ready to get involved? See the guidance below for how to best participate in the National Month of Service.
- By August 31st, have a representative complete the Registration Form for your group. This form helps us track expected participation and simplifies future project and media submissions for you.
- During August, discuss as a group what service projects you are already planning on hosting in September, and also consider if it is the right time to try a new service project! We suggest focusing on the First Purpose First: “To promote the existence and welfare of the college and university bands and to cultivate at large a wholesome respect for their activities and achievements.” Here are some ideas you can consider to elevate your existing and new service projects:
Service Project Suggestions:- Collaborate with your Director of Bands on ways to recruit high school band students to join collegiate bands.
- Ask what service opportunities there are for band ensembles you do not frequently serve already. Some examples may include jazz bands and pep bands.
- Partner with another campus organization to promote band.
- Promote/attend a concert for a college or university that does not have a ΚΚΨ chapter.
- Learn from another chapter in your district about what service projects they have done.
- Get over 80% of your active membership involved in a service project.
- Plan how your group will celebrate Boh’s Birthday on or around September 23rd. Strive to make Boh proud!
During September
Dr. Nic Rorrer, National President, is challenging Brothers to see how fast we can accomplish the following goals:
- Can we log 1919 Hours of Service in the First Week of September?
- Can we log 1878 Hours of Service on Boh’s Birthday?
- As an organization, can we break 19,190 hours of service in the Month of September?
Use Google Forms and/or social media posts to share details about your service projects! The National Communications and Programs Committees will use this information to showcase the awesome service projects conducted across the country.
