From the Desk of the National President: June 2025 Updates

Brothers –

Welcome to June—a month full of heart, meaning, and celebration. As we step into our National Month of Celebration and recognize Pride Month, we are reminded of the beauty that exists when we take the time to honor who we are, where we’ve been, and those who walk alongside us. This month, we celebrate the joy, resilience, and brilliance of our LGBTQ+ Brothers, musicians, educators, and friends—those who continue to lead, uplift, and inspire with courage and authenticity.

Oprah Winfrey once said, “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” And I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately. In the rush to finish a semester, close out reports (like the Spring Activity Report that is due today 👀), and prepare for convention, we often forget to pause and acknowledge the small moments—the growth we’ve had, the people who’ve supported us, the music that’s carried us through.

So this month, I invite you to take that pause. Celebrate the quiet wins, the loud ones, and everything in between. Be proud of how far you’ve come, and don’t forget to cheer on the Brothers beside you. These final weeks of the biennium are a time to reflect, connect, and move forward with purpose.

With that spirit, I’m excited to share some important updates and reminders below. Let’s keep showing up for each other, and let’s carry that energy all the way to National Convention. I’m proud to be on this journey with you!

JUNE UPDATES

Update #1: Celebrating Our Journey – Join the National Month of Celebration!

As we near the end of this biennium and prepare to gather this summer, June invites us to celebrate the legacy, growth, and resilience of our nearly 106-year journey as Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi. Our National Month of Celebration honors the accomplishments, milestones, and people who have shaped this biennium—from new chapters and national programs to local wins and personal moments of impact.

Each week, we’re inviting Brothers to reflect and engage through themed prompts and hashtags. Whether you’re posting online, recognizing someone in your chapter, or simply reflecting in your own time, your story matters. Here’s how you can join us:

Week 1 (June 2–8): Celebrating Our Beginnings & History

  • Share your initiation date or chapter founding using #KKPsiBeginnings
  • Post a throwback photo or chapter fun fact

Week 2 (June 9–15): Celebrating Our Values & Impact

  • Reflect on a moment you lived out our values using #KKPsiInAction
  • Highlight a chapter project or service initiative

Week 3 (June 16–22): Celebrating Our Brothers & Community

  • Shout out a Brother or mentor who’s made a difference with #KKPsiCelebration
  • Recognize award recipients and servant leaders

Week 4 (June 23–29): Celebrating Our Growth & Goals

  • Share stats, goals met, or chapter milestones with #KKPsiExcellence
  • Update your Crown Pearl Goal progress

Week 5 (June 30–July 1): Celebrating Our Journey & Future

  • Spotlight graduates and alumni using #KKPsiForever
  • Share what’s next for you or your chapter in the years ahead

Together, let’s lift up the moments—big and small—that have made this biennium unforgettable. Let’s honor where we’ve been, who we’ve become, and the bright future we’re building, one note and one Brother at a time!

Brothers, we are now less than 45 days away from the opening gavel of our 2025 National Convention in Lexington, KY—and the countdown is officially on! This convention is more than a meeting—it’s a powerful homecoming, a moment to reconnect, celebrate, and shape the future of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Update #3: Prepare to Vote – Stay Informed on National Elections

Brothers, our National Elections are more than just a formality—they are a defining moment that will shape the direction of the Kappa Kappa Psi journey for years to come. The slate you’ll see later this month is the result of months of thoughtful work by the National Committee on Nominations, made up of 15 Brothers representing every district and bringing diverse perspectives and lived experiences to the table. This committee didn’t simply select individuals—they built a team. One they believe will serve the Fraternity with strength, unity, and vision.

The slate, which will be announced by Committee Chair Adam Cantley no later than June 15, wasn’t created lightly. Each candidate was reviewed holistically—their materials, interviews, past leadership, and demonstrated values. As you prepare to vote, I urge you to do the same. Don’t rely solely on what candidates say, write, or post on social media. Go deeper. Review their qualifications, examine their past actions, and ask if their record aligns with their promises. That’s how we ensure integrity and accountability.

As voters, you hold the power—not just to elect individuals, but to build a team that reflects our highest ideals. A team that can work collaboratively, represent our Brotherhood with care, and lead us into the next chapter of our journey. Let’s take that responsibility seriously and engage in this process with the intention, honesty, and reflection it deserves.

You can review bios on our National Elections site and watch our last VPSA Chat on how to best engage with this process here. Let’s honor this process by staying informed and engaged. Your voice—and your vote—matters. Questions? Reach out to nominations@kkpsi.org.

Update #4: Student Speakers & Parliamentarians

One of my proudest memories as a student was serving in a leadership role at the 2015 National Convention in Lexington, Kentucky. That experience not only changed the way I saw our fraternity—it changed the way I saw myself. Because of that, since joining the National Council, I’ve worked intentionally to center student voices and leadership in everything we do. This year, I am honored to continue that commitment by expanding our student leadership presence at the 2025 National Convention.

We received 33 incredible applications—18 for Student Speaker and 15 for Student Parliamentarian—from across all six districts. Every application reflected passion, purpose, and pride in the Kappa Kappa Psi Journey. These students represent our diverse Brotherhood: 6 from the MWD, 5 from the NCD, 8 from the NED, 6 from the SED, 4 from the SWD, and 4 from the WD. Thank you to all 33 applicants for stepping up and putting your names forward. Your courage and willingness to serve are a testament to the bright future of our Fraternity!

After careful review and discussion, I am thrilled to announce the student leaders who will help guide and support our upcoming convention:

2025 Student Plenary Speakers

  • Sophia Elizabeth Glanville (Epsilon Pi, Kansas State University, MWD)
  • Summer-Laila Hesham Khaswan (Eta Omicron, James Madison University, NED)
  • Jahsere S. Rush (Eta Omega, Howard University, NED)

These outstanding students will each kick off a full day of our convention with a powerful plenary address centered on our theme, The Kappa Kappa Psi Journey.

2025 Student Parliamentarians

  • Juan Diaz (Iota Pi, California Polytechnic State University, WD)
  • Maximilian Leigh McAdams (Alpha Nu, University of Wyoming, MWD)
  • Devdeep Singh Rajpal (Nu, University of Michigan, NCD)
  • Malachi Seth Walker (Iota Zeta, North Carolina A&T State University, SED)

These Brothers will support our National Parliamentarian, help manage floor procedures during our business sessions, and ensure that the voices of our delegates are heard clearly and effectively.

Representation matters—regardless of what anyone may say to discredit it or shift the conversation to being solely “merit-based.” The truth is, representation is merit. It brings lived experiences, fresh perspectives, and the kind of leadership that reflects the richness of who we are as a Brotherhood. This National Leadership Team believes deeply in building a future where every Brother can see themselves in positions of leadership and influence. We care about ensuring that our student leadership reflects the diversity and brilliance of our Fraternity—not just in word, but in action.

Congratulations to our selected students, and thank you again to all who applied. You are what makes this Fraternity thrive!

Update #5: Crown Pearl Goals Update

Brothers, we are approaching the end of the first year of the Crown Pearl Goals Initiative, and we are grateful for all of you joining us for this program. Excitingly, there are 45 Chapters (over 20%) that are Crown Pearl Chapters who will be recognized at National Convention. Importantly, there is still time to earn some of your Crown Pearl Goals for this year to be recognized as a Crown Pearl Chapter at National Convention!

If you want to find out if your Chapter is a Crown Pearl Chapter, please go to our tracker which can be found here to see your Chapter’s progress. There are still Opportunities such as turning in your Graduating Senior Report or by highlighting the work you did during the National Month of Service or Month of Musicianship by filling out this supplemental form!

Once again, we are thankful for your participation in the first year of the Crown Pearl Goals and we look forward to continuing this next biennium so we can highlight the amazing accomplishments of our Chapters.

To all our members, Active and Alumni: Your voice matters—and we want to hear it!

Our 2025 Active Member Climate Survey is now open and is intended for our Active, Conditional, and Associate members. Every two years, this survey provides Kappa Kappa Psi’s national leadership with insight into the Fraternity’s communications, programs, and operations, helping us better understand the diverse experiences of our Brothers, therefore informing how the Fraternity can evolve and grow to meet its members’ needs.

When Brothers complete the survey, they earn a chance to WIN A FREE NATCON REGISTRATION, a FREE CROWN PEARL BADGE, or FREE ACTIVE DUES for the coming academic year!

If you are an Alumni, Life, or Honorary member, please take the 2025 Alumni Member Climate Survey! This survey allows the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association the benefit of your insights.

Both surveys will be open through June 15th. We invite each Brother to please take 10 minutes to complete their respective survey. Your voice helps us improve and serve all Brothers more effectively.

Update #7: Awards and Recognitions

During our National Month of Celebration, we encourage our Chapters and Brothers to elevate their achievements for recognition and to honor others for their accomplishments!

  • You can highlight a Brother to celebrate for their contributions to their college bands, their campus and communities, and our fraternity by completing the new “Celebrate a Brother” form.  Information collected through this form will be used in future fraternity social media posts and communications.  NO DEADLINE, BUT WE’D LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT BROTHERS TO CELEBRATE!

As we reflect on the meaning of this National Month of Celebration, let us remember why it matters. Celebration is not just about recognition—it’s about honoring the effort, the growth, and the intention behind each step we’ve taken. It’s about giving ourselves permission to pause and say, “Look at what we’ve done. Look at how far we’ve come.”

Brothers, I encourage you to take the time this month to celebrate—not just the big milestones, but the quiet victories too. Every long meeting, every late-night service project, every new Brother welcomed into the fold—these are all pieces of something greater. You’ve earned the right to be proud. You’ve earned the space to be seen and celebrated.

So let’s keep showing up for each other. Let’s keep sharing our stories, uplifting our wins, and recognizing the power of what we build—together. I am so proud to be on this Kappa Kappa Psi Journey with you.

In celebration,

From the Desk of the National President: May 2025 Updates

Brothers,

Welcome to May—a month where dreams, hope, and celebration intertwine! As the days grow longer and the world around us begins to bloom, we are reminded of the beauty that lives not only in the music we share but in the bonds we nurture and the stories we uplift. This month, during AANHPI Heritage Month, we proudly honor our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Brothers, musicians, educators, and community members, celebrating the incredible impact their voices and journeys have had on our fraternity and the greater world around us.

One of my favorite authors, Emily Brontë, once wrote that May is “the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope.” So I ask you—what are your wishes and hopes for this month? What dreams are waiting to be carried forward by your hands, your heart, your voice? Brothers, never forget that we are allowed—no, we are called—to dream boldly and to love even more fiercely. In a world that often feels divided, let us be a beacon of light, compassion, and resilience. Even as school comes to an end, let’s continue to spread our love for music, community, and one another as we march towards the end of the biennium.

On that overly emotional note, I’m excited to share this month’s updates and opportunities with you below. With less than eighty days left in this biennium, let’s fill the remaining time we have together with meaning and move forward together, hearts open and spirits high!

MAY UPDATES

Update #1: End-of-Year Chapter Reports and Forms

Amidst the finals, concerts, and end-of-year celebrations, it’s extremely important that each chapter takes the time to complete the required end-of-year reports. These forms are not just paperwork—they are crucial for ensuring the continued health and success of your chapter. Please make time to review and complete the following:

  • Spring Activity Report: This required report provides a comprehensive look at your chapter’s activities from the spring semester. It may require input from several officers and your Sponsor, so we highly recommend starting early. Reports are due by June 1, 2025.
  • Officer & Chapter Update Form: If your elections are complete, don’t forget to update your officers in OPUS! This ensures new officers have the proper access and communications. This form is required and should be submitted as soon as possible after elections.
  • Graduating Senior Report: Help us keep your alumni records accurate! Please submit this report before Brothers graduate to ensure a smooth transition to Alumni Status and to avoid incorrect billing for next year. Aim to submit within 30 days of graduation, but earlier is better.

For questions or assistance with any of these forms, please contact kkytbs@kkytbs.org.

Also, if you missed our Chapter Officer Transition Workshop Weekend, please use the links below to access the recordings. For additional assistance with chapter officer transitions or any other chapter operations-related questions, please reach out to the National Committee on Chapter Operations at chapteroperations@kkpsi.org

We encourage every chapter to:

  • Carefully review all candidate information.
  • Discuss the leadership qualities you want to see.

Update #4: Crown Pearl Goals Update

Brothers, we are approaching the end of the first year of the Crown Pearl Goals initiative, and we are grateful for all of you joining us for this program. At National Convention, we will unveil the 2025-2026 Crown Pearl Goals, but there is still time to earn some of your Crown Pearl Goals for this year to be recognized as a Crown Pearl Chapter at National Convention!

Recently, our CFRs have made a public version of the tracker, which can be found here to see your Chapter’s progress. Opportunities for getting your Crown Pearl Goals include submitting your chapter reports and forms (Spring Activity Report, Initiate (or Honorary) Registration Form, Graduating Senior Report, Officer & Chapter Update Form, etc.) on time! If you also think we missed a highlight from the Month of Service, Month of Musicianship, or more, please fill out this supplemental form!

A hearty congratulations to the following chapters who have already completed 10 Crown Pearl Goals to be named as a Crown Pearl Chapter:

  • Nu Xi – University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Theta Beta – Boston University
  • Iota Xi – Norfolk State University
  • Nu Gamma – Robert Morris University
  • Nu Chi – Wilkes University
  • Pi – Auburn University
  • Delta Iota – Florida A&M University
  • Zeta Chi – University of South Carolina
  • Eta Iota – Bethune-Cookman University
  • Kappa Tau – University of South Florida
  • Mu Eta – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

It is still possible for 60+ chapters to join their ranks with the remaining goals. We look forward to celebrating all of you at National Convention!

Update #5: Member Climate Survey

Your voice matters—and we want to hear it!

Update #6: Welcome Four New Chapters!

This past weekend, we had the opportunity to welcome three new Chapters back to the Fraternity, while installing one new Chapter. Please join us in welcoming (and welcoming back) the following Chapters:

  • The Beta Epsilon Chapter at the University of South Dakota, installed by Vice President of Membership and Expansion Dr. Nic Rorrer
  • The Eta Chi Chapter at Bowie State University, installed by Northeast District Governor Rassii Elliot
  • The Lambda Pi Chapter at the University of Texas at Tyler, installed by Immediate Past President Jessica Lee
  • The Xi Kappa Chapter at the University of West Alabama, installed by Vice President for Student Affairs Arupa Gopal-Campbell

We are tremendously grateful to both the members of the Friend and Advocate initiative who helped guide these groups for the past semester, as well as the local Chapters who graciously provided the ritual supplies for the Chapters. We are excited to announce that we have welcomed 11 new Chapters into the Fraternity this biennium! We look forward to the work that they will do to advance our mission.

As we journey through the rest of this biennium, I know that the world beyond our fraternity walls can sometimes seem stark, heavy, and uncertain. But I invite you, just for a moment, to pause. To take a deep breath. To reflect on what you are grateful for, and to find joy in even the smallest moments. Darkness may try to find its way into our lives, but remember: we are the ones who carry the light within us.

As leaders, our communities look to us for hope, for vision, for the reassurance that tomorrow can be brighter than today. And Brothers, you have that power. A simple smile, a word of kindness, a hand reaching out—it doesn’t take much to create a positive shift in someone’s world. Take each day this month to reflect on your journey and to make one small act of kindness for someone else’s journey, because we are in this together. We are not alone. We are marching shoulder to shoulder, heart to heart, lifting one another as we move forward. I am proud—truly proud—to walk alongside each of you as we continue our path on #TheKKPsiJourney

Let’s make this month a time of love, hope, and celebration as we move ever closer to our National Month of Celebration and our 2025 National Convention.

With all my heart and hope,

In Memory of Dr. Douglas F. Stotter, Past National Vice President for Professional Relations

Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi,

It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of one of our beloved Brothers and past National Vice Presidents for Professional Relations, Dr. Douglas F. Stotter. As we come together in remembrance, we celebrate his incredible life, his service to Kappa Kappa Psi, and his lasting impact on the world of music and bands.

Dr. Douglas F. Stotter’s (Life Member of the Nu Chapter) career was a shining example of excellence, leadership, and love for music. He served for 20 years as Director of Bands and Coordinator of the Wind and Percussion Division at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he inspired countless students through his teaching, mentorship, and musicianship. His influence extended far beyond Texas, as he conducted and taught across the United States and internationally in China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Within Kappa Kappa Psi, Dr. Stotter served faithfully as our National Vice President for Professional Relations from 2015 to 2019. His leadership was instrumental in coordinating two National Intercollegiate Bands and strengthening the bonds between our Fraternity and the greater band community. Dr. Stotter led with humility, consistency, and a deep compassion for people. He was a true advocate for the ideals of musicianship, leadership, and service, and above all, he was a cherished friend and mentor to so many.

To help honor Dr. Stotter’s memory in a way that words alone cannot fully capture, I have asked Past National President Dr. Jack Lee to share some of his personal experiences and reflections:

I can vividly remember my first interaction with Dr. Stotter. He came to the University of Texas at Arlington in the Spring of 2005 as part of a search for a new director of bands. I quickly realized how privileged I was to learn from Dr. Stotter.

To play in his ensemble was a commitment. A commitment to you and for him. He approached every rehearsal with the ambition of it being performance worthy. If you were lucky enough to be a part of his ensemble, you knew that preparation was a part of who Dr. Stotter was. He believed it was his duty as a teacher to remind you that “every rehearsal is a performance,” a phrase often repeated in Dr. Stotter’s rehearsals. Through his high expectations, we created some of the most beautiful musical moments.

As I finished my Bachelor’s Degree, I was unbelievably fortunate to be offered a position as Dr. Stotter’s Graduate Teaching Assistant. I learned more in those two years than I can ever possibly put into words. Yet it wasn’t the music lessons that truly meant the most. It was the time we spent together; it was about the fellowship we shared as he instilled lessons about musicianship and life. Dr. Stotter went from being my teacher, to my colleague, to my friend, and to part of my family.

In 2015, I was blessed to be elected the 45th National President of Kappa Kappa Psi. At that convention, I introduced Dr. Stotter as the incoming National Vice President for Professional Relations – a position he held for four years. In my remarks, I stated, “I am confident that Dr. Stotter’s skill set will be a valuable resource to continuing the important relationship between our Fraternity and College and University Bands.” If there is one decision that I believe I got right, it was appointing him as our National VPPR. He was a staunch advocate for college and university band programs, and he was the consummate professional. We are a better Fraternity because of his service.

It took me many years to finally call him Doug instead of Dr. Stotter. That’s the level of respect I had for him, and the respect he earned. As I reflect on the many memories we shared, I’ve come to realize that Doug was the true embodiment of love. That’s likely what the Nu Chapter saw in him those many years ago when he was first embraced as a Brother. That’s what I saw all these years as he used his precious gift of music. He loved you so much, he wanted you to be nothing less than the best you could be.

The world is a little less bright without Doug in it. I miss my mentor. I love and miss my friend. Thank you, Doug, for being the great person you were, and for making my life so rich by having you in it. AEA.

– Dr. Jack Lee, Past National President, Kappa Kappa Psi

To share remembrances, photographs, or notes of gratitude with the National Chapter, please use the following form: www.kkpsi.org/remembrances. If you plan to share your memories via social media, please include the hashtag #KappaKappaPsiRemembers.

As we grieve this loss, let us also give thanks for the extraordinary legacy Dr. Stotter leaves behind—a legacy of music, mentorship, humility, and friendship. May we honor his memory by carrying forward his spirit in our lives, our music, and our service to others.

In Brotherhood,

Hello and happy National Month of Brotherhood! I hope this message finds you well and in good spirits as we enter the final stretch of the academic year. Whether your campus is already buzzing with end-of-year celebrations or you’re gearing up for finals and senior send-offs, I want to take a moment to say THANK YOU!

Thank you for the countless hours you’ve dedicated to your chapter, your band, and to our Brotherhood. Your leadership, your heart, and your steady presence throughout this year have made a lasting difference. Kappa Kappa Psi is stronger because of you. I am continually inspired by your work, and I hope you’re proud of everything you’ve helped your chapter accomplish.

As we close out the year, I’m reaching out with a few important reminders and deadlines to help set your chapter up for success moving forward:
1. Chapter Officer Transition Weekend

Our National Committee on Chapter Operations is hosting two virtual sessions designed to support your chapter’s officer transition process. You are welcome to attend either or both!

2. Student Keynote Speaker & Parliamentarian Applications

Looking for a way to get involved at National Convention? These roles are fantastic opportunities to contribute to our summer gathering in Lexington, KY. Applications for both are due by the end of April 30, 2025.

3. National Convention Delegate & Proxy Form

Due by June 1 (no later than June 15, 2025)

This form is REQUIRED of all chapters—whether you’re attending or not—to ensure you’re properly represented.

4. Officer & Chapter Update Form

If your elections are complete, don’t forget to update your officers in OPUS, so that the new officers can get the correct levels of access. This is REQUIRED for all chapters, and is due as soon as possible after elections. Be sure to allow time for your Chapter Sponsor and Director of Bands to sign. For assistance, email kkytbs@kkytbs.org.

5. Graduating Senior Report

Please start this report early to ensure it’s submitted before graduation. This helps us accurately transition those members to Alumni Status, and ensures that they won’t be counted in your total dues next semester. Again, please give your Sponsor and DOB enough time to sign in OPUS. We encourage chapters to submit this report within 30 days of graduation, but it is helpful to submit even before Brothers leave campus. For assistance, email kkytbs@kkytbs.org.

6. Spring Activity Report

This REQUIRED report gives a comprehensive summary of your chapter’s activities from this semester. It is a bit more in-depth and may require input from your officers, Sponsor, or others, so we strongly encourage you to start early. These are due to NHQ by June 1, so please factor in additional time for your Sponsor and DOB to review and approve the form. For assistance, email kkytbs@kkytbs.org.

–––

Brothers, we are officially under 100 days from National Convention and the end of the biennium. While that may seem far away, the best preparation starts now. Please set aside time to complete these tasks—and as always, we are here to support you, so don’t hesitate to reach out. Keep on striving!

With admiration and appreciation,

Bang T. Co (he/him)
National President & Ex-Officio Member of the Board of Trustees

From the Desk of the National President: April 2025 Updates

Brothers,

Happy April! As we spring into the new month, I am thrilled to announce the start of our National Month of Brotherhood. What exactly does “Brotherhood” mean? While we each have our personal understanding and feelings about it, this month challenges us to articulate and demonstrate its true essence, especially during times of challenge when unity feels distant. Let’s use this opportunity to deepen our connections and truly explore the meaning of Brotherhood within our chapters and communities.

Additionally, we celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month, a time to honor the profound influence of jazz on our Fraternity and the broader musical landscape. This month encourages us to dive into the history and impact of jazz, enriching our appreciation of this powerful art form. As previously mentioned, we look forward to the debut of the Kappa Kappa Psi Intercollegiate Jazz Band at our 2025 National Convention. Our Board of Trustees is diligently working to ensure this initiative is both impactful and financially viable, offering numerous ways for Brothers to actively contribute to its success.

With only 105 days until our National Convention and 108 days to the conclusion of this biennium, we still have significant work ahead, alongside much to celebrate and be proud of. Each day brings us closer to these important milestones, filled with opportunities for growth and celebration. I encourage you to carefully read through the updates in this newsletter. By fully engaging with each aspect of our Fraternity’s goals and working collaboratively, we make our collective march toward the foothills of success smoother and more rewarding.

Update #4: April VPSA Chat on Transitioning to Alumni Status

Join us for our next VPSA Chat on April 15 at 7 PM CT, featuring an essential discussion that will benefit not only our graduating seniors but all members contemplating the transition from active to alumni status. Our special guests, Arupa Gopal-Campbell and Brittany Biberston, Alumni Association LAA Director, will lead this engaging session.

The chat will focus on how future alumni can seamlessly transition to alumni status, the ways to stay involved, and the benefits of joining the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association. We understand that the majority of our fraternal journey is spent as alumni, and without careful planning and intention, it’s easy to feel disconnected. This discussion aims to equip our members with the tools and knowledge to continue their active engagement and find new pathways to contribute to our fraternity’s legacy.

This VPSA Chat will be streamed live on Facebook Live, providing an interactive platform for members to ask questions and gain insights directly from experienced alumni. If you have any questions about transitioning to alumni status or if you’d like Arupa to speak directly to your chapter about navigating your KKPsi journey as an alum, please reach out to her at arupa@kkpsi.org.

Update #5: Chapter Officer Transition Weekend w/ CHOPs

We’re hosting our Chapter Officer Transition Weekend to ensure smooth leadership handovers within our chapters. This is a vital event for both incoming and outgoing officers, aimed at preparing them for their roles and responsibilities.

Workshop Schedule:

  • Saturday, April 26, 2025 (5 PM – 7 PM CT)
  • Sunday, April 27, 2025 (12 PM – 2 PM CT)

The sessions will begin with our standard Officer Transitions presentation, potentially followed by role-specific breakouts, and conclude with an open forum for discussion and problem-solving.

Given the timing during finals season, we’ve chosen these hours to minimize conflict. It’s important that both outgoing and incoming officers attend together to facilitate effective knowledge transfer. Mark your calendars and ensure your chapter’s leadership is ready for a successful transition. For more details, please contact the National Committee on Chapter Operations at chapteroperations@kkpsi.org

As this month unfolds, we’ll encounter new challenges and opportunities that may cause us to question our commitments and values. I invite each of you to reflect deeply on what it means to be a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi and consider the responsibility we hold towards one another. Remember, the strength and future of our Fraternity are in our hands. We cannot simply wait for others to lead; instead, each of us must proactively step forward to fulfill our oaths and embody the values of Kappa Kappa Psi. Love within our brotherhood is more than just words—it is a commitment we actively uphold, in both good times and bad.

This month, let’s reaffirm our dedication to one another and to the collective growth and success of our Fraternity. When faced with external pressures and internal challenges that threaten to divide us, we must work even harder to stand united, marching shoulder to shoulder. With just over 100 days left in this biennium, I am proud to march alongside each of you on #TheKKPsiJourney as we continue to support college and university bands.

From the Desk of the National President: March 2025 Updates

Brothers,

As we march into the new month, we are greeted with the opportunity to honor Women’s History Month, celebrate March Fo(u)rth, and kick off our 2025 District Convention season. Despite the excitement these events bring, I acknowledge the overwhelming nature of our current world. Each day presents new challenges, and like many of you, I feel the weight of these trying times on myself and those I care about. The darkness can sometimes seem all-encompassing, tempting us to surrender to despair and discord.

Similar to many of my predecessors, I turned to our Ritual in times of uncertainty, seeking guidance as they did. During my recent reflections, a familiar lesson emerged—one that speaks of adversity and resilience. It taught me that though I am the “master of my fate,” I am never truly alone on this journey. In moments of need, the simple act of reaching out for help or extending a hand in kindness can light our way. This isn’t a new story for us. Our Brotherhood has faced and climbed far steeper mountains throughout our 105-year history, always finding strength in our unity. We’ve thrived by supporting each other, walking side by side through whatever darkness we faced. Now, I pass this reminder on to you: as we navigate these turbulent times, let us shine for each other—finding light in the darkness, comfort in our community, and hope in our collective journey as Brothers.

With this in mind, I hope the updates below brighten your day and bring you joy, showcasing the progress of our Fraternity and the impactful work our Brothers are achieving nationwide.

MARCH UPDATES

Update #1: 2025 District Convention Season

The time has come to kick off our 2025 District Convention season, starting with a visit to Camp Hill, PA, for our Northeast District Convention from March 7-9. We’ll continue our journey to Atlanta, GA, for the Southeast District Convention on March 21-22 and then conclude this month’s conventions in Midwest City, OK ,for the Southwest District Convention from March 28-30.

These gatherings are far more than mere events; they are significant milestones that help forge lifelong memories and strengthen our Brotherhood. Each convention brings us together, drawing strength from every interaction and advancing our mission. Attending a convention is the best way to ensure your voice is heard and your presence felt in your district.

For more details about each convention, please visit events.kkytbs.org. We look forward to connecting with you at each district convention!

Update #2: Founders Circle –  William A. Scroggs (Level 1) Certification

Brothers, as you have hopefully noticed throughout the National Month of Leadership, we launched the William A. Scroggs Level Certification of the Founders Circle. This level of the Founders Circle is meant to develop our Brothers as accountable Individual Leaders who are self-aware and understand their own values while leading with integrity, passion, and enthusiasm. As part of this program, we are looking forward to recognizing Brothers who have reflected on their own individual leadership journey by awarding this certification at District Convention. To be recognized at District Convention, you must attend a District Convention and fill out this Certification Form.

To help you fill out the certification form, we hosted a series of conversations about the different themes presented in the William A Scroggs Level of the Founders Circle which can be found on our Facebook page. Additionally, we also prepared the following as a resource for you all to help guide conversation:

Although the Founders Circle Certifications are awarded to individuals, we absolutely encourage you to work through these discussions with your Brothers and your Chapters! A Founders Circle discussion can be a great way to augment an MEP or a Chapter Meeting. We hope to recognize some of our great leaders at conventions this Spring and launch Level II and Level III of the Founders Circle next year!

Update #3: National Service Spotlight & AEA Scholarships

Service, a foundational pillar of our fraternity, manifests uniquely across different campuses. This month, we are thrilled to spotlight three chapters that exemplify outstanding service, each tailoring their efforts to enrich their respective music programs:

  • Pi Chapter (SED – Auburn University) has demonstrated exceptional service by “Dotting” the practice field for the Auburn University Marching Band, ensuring precise formations and performance readiness.
  • Kappa Psi Chapter (NED – Virginia Commonwealth University) has significantly contributed through clinics and fundraisers benefiting local public high school band programs, fostering community growth and support.
  • Nu Gamma Chapter (NED – Robert Morris University) has engaged in meaningful mentorship and service initiatives for the Aliquippa High School Band Program, enhancing educational opportunities for young musicians.

Additionally, the Nu Zeta Chapter at Pennsylvania Western University, Edinboro (NED), was selected by the National Committee on Programs to receive a grant for its innovative “Marching Band Camp Luau” project, which aims to enhance the camp experience for participants.

We are also proud to announce the Spring 2025 Class of AEA Scholarship recipients. These Active Brothers have demonstrated leadership both on the field and in the classroom, earning them each a $1,250 scholarship for their academic achievements and dedication:

  • Davian Barba (Iota Alpha Chapter at California State University, Fresno)
  • Zoe Bright (Mu Eta Chapter at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
  • Ava Cardner (Gamma Iota Chapter at the University of New Mexico)
  • Garrett Haas (Epsilon Theta Chapter at the University of Louisiana at Monroe)
  • Jason Lane (Delta Iota Chapter at Florida A&M University)
  • Rachel Parks (Alpha Delta Chapter at Ohio University)
  • Amanda Turner-Gibson (Alpha Eta Chapter at the University of Florida)

For further details about our recognitions and programs, please visit kkpsi.org/programs or contact our National Committee on Programs at programs@kkpsi.org. We look forward to seeing more inspiring contributions across our chapters!

Update #4: National Officer Election Site & Newsletter

As we approach this important period in our fraternity’s cycle, the National Officer Elections stand as a cornerstone event of each biennium. This process is not just about selecting leaders for the next term; it is about setting the precedent and tone for years to come. The manner in which we conduct these elections can ignite enthusiasm and integrity in future elections or, conversely, diminish the vibrancy of our process.

I urge each chapter to engage deeply with this election process. Take the necessary time to review the candidate information thoroughly and discuss what qualities and visions you seek in your future leaders. Over the next few weeks and months, the National Committee on Nominations will provide further details about the election process, introduce the candidates, and explain how you can participate actively.

With that, we are excited to launch the Official Kappa Kappa Psi Elections site, which presents all 16 candidates for the four National Council positions and three open Board of Trustees seats. To gain a deeper understanding of each candidate’s platform and vision, I encourage you to read our 2025 National Convention Elections Newsletter. This resource is designed to help you make informed decisions about the future leadership of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Should you have any questions or need further clarification on the election process, please do not hesitate to contact the National Committee on Nominations at nominations@kkpsi.org. Your informed participation is crucial to shaping the Kappa Kappa Psi Journey and the future of our Brotherhood!

Update #5: Important Information for Your #JourneyToNatCon2025

The National Council and I are excited to share more details to help our Brothers start their #JourneyToNatCon2025! As we gear up for our largest event of the biennium, it’s time to begin planning your travels to Lexington this summer. We’ve compiled essential updates and resources to ensure you are well-prepared and informed:

These elements will also be highlighted during the national town hall sessions at the upcoming district conventions. It is crucial for each chapter and member to review the information provided through each link thoroughly. Should you have any questions about the 2025 National Convention or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out to me directly at president@kkpsi.org.

Important Note: We are delaying the launch of our NatCon registration page until after most of the district conventions have concluded.

Update #6: 2025 National Convention Student Keynote & Parliamentarian

One of the most exciting opportunities at our 2025 National Convention is for students to take center stage as our Student Keynote Speaker or serve diligently as the Student Parliamentarian. These roles are integral to Kappa Kappa Psi’s commitment to fostering student leadership and ensuring our organization remains student-centric.

2025 Student Keynote Speaker

Have you ever wanted to inspire a national audience? As the Student Keynote Speaker, you’ll have the privilege of being one of the key voices heard at our National Convention in Lexington, KY. This role calls for you to deliver a 7-10 minute speech (approximately 1400-2000 words) exploring the theme “The Power of Our Stories: Shaping the KKPsi Journey Together.” We’re looking for speeches that delve into how personal experiences shape our understanding of Musicianship, Leadership, Service, and Brotherhood, and how these stories strengthen our fraternal bonds. Applicants must submit their speech in both text and audio formats.

  • Prompt: In Kappa Kappa Psi, each member’s journey contributes profoundly to the narrative of our Fraternity. This keynote invites you to explore and share the pivotal moments and experiences that have shaped your personal growth and how these stories enrich our collective mission. How have the chapters of your life added depth to your understanding of Musicianship, Leadership, Service, and Brotherhood? How does telling your story and hearing others’ stories deepen bonds and inspire us all to reach greater heights together? We encourage you to bring your unique perspectives and reflections, showcasing how individual insights can weave into the broader symphony of our Fraternity’s legacy.

2025 Student Parliamentarian

This role is perfect for those who have a keen interest in parliamentary procedure. The Student Parliamentarian assists the National Council and the National Parliamentarian in ensuring that meetings run smoothly according to Robert’s Rules of Order. If appointed, you will attend all business sessions and play a crucial role in the governance of our convention, though you will not serve as a chapter delegate.

We encourage all eligible members to apply and bring their unique insights and leadership skills to the forefront of our National Convention. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at president@kkpsi.org. I hope to see a lot of interest and applications in my inbox by April 30, 2025!

Update #7: Jazz Composition Competition

The Jazz Composition Competition‘s goal is to debut as a composition competition similar to the solo competition during our 2025 National Convention. The winning composition would be performed as part of the Kappa Kappa Psi Intercollegiate Jazz Band Concert coordinated by Dr. William Lake, Dr. LaToya Webb, and the Kappa Kappa Psi Board of Trustees.

The deadline to submit is March 15, 2025.

For more information about this competition, please visit the JCC website or email the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Awards and Activities Committee at kkpsiaa-awards@kkpsi.org.

As I approach the end of my term, my commitment will shift towards ensuring a smooth (and peaceful) transition for Dr. Rorrer, who is set to guide us into the next chapter of our fraternal journey.

In these remaining months, I look forward to cherishing every moment we have together, embracing each opportunity to strengthen our bonds and advance our mission. Let’s continue to march forth on #TheKKPsiJourney, carrying with us the spirit of harmony and the light of hope for a better tomorrow.

Together, we’ll explore what it means to lead with purpose and leave a legacy of service.

Update #2: National Executive Director Search Update

As we continue the search for our next National Executive Director (NXD), I want to provide an update on our progress. First and foremost, I want to express my deep gratitude to all the national leaders who were involved in the first search process. Your dedication and insight have been invaluable as we navigate this important transition.

It has now been a year since our previous NXD retired, and during this time, we have been working diligently with our search firm and our Sisters to refine and strengthen our process. This includes updating the job description and salary range to align with the current needs, expectations, and values of our organizations. Anyone familiar with this type of work knows that finding the right candidate takes time, and while we were not able to secure a candidate from the first search, we have learned a great deal from that process. These lessons will help us make more informed decisions as we move forward.

In the meantime, our National Council, Board of Trustees, and Sister leadership teams have taken an active role in overseeing National Headquarters (NHQ) operations. We lead weekly staff meetings, conduct one-on-one check-ins, and work directly with our NHQ staff to ensure they have the guidance and support needed to serve our membership effectively. While this is not the situation any of us initially envisioned for this biennium, it has provided a valuable opportunity to deeply engage with NHQ operations. We have gained greater insight into our staff’s responsibilities, identified areas for improvement, and clarified the skill sets necessary for our next NXD to best serve the organization.

Call for Spring 2025 Petitioning Group Advisors and 2025-2027 National Leadership Team Volunteers

Hello Brothers!

As we enter into the National Month of Leadership for 2025 it is important for us to look forward to the future of Kappa Kappa Psi. In that spirit, President Co will shortly be sharing our programming opportunities for the National Month of Leadership to help our members grow as individual leaders. Today though, I am reaching out to you all because we need your help both this semester and in the next biennium.

For this semester, we have multiple Petitioning and ReCharge Groups across the country that will need the help of Alumni volunteers as they become Chapters. To those ends, we are holding a call for the Delta Cohort of the Friend and Advocates Initiative to both train advisors and guide them through the process as we welcome multiple Chapters this Spring. The commitment for this is a least one weekend of travel to the Chapter Installation as well as one to three hours a week to train as a Friend and Advocate and provide lessons to our Petitioning and ReCharge Groups. If you are interested in serving as a 2025 Advisor please fill out this form by February 2nd: Friend and Advocate Spring 2025 Solicitation

In addition to looking for Spring 2025 Volunteers, we are also looking for 2025-2027 National Leadership Team Volunteers for our Appointed Positions. Specifically, we are looking for volunteers for Brothers to serve as District Governors and Committee Chairs. We are looking for individuals who can advance the 2025-2027 Biennium Plan, The AEA Way (The Biennium Plan is still a work in progress, but initial details can be found here).  Both Governors and Committee Chairs are expected to represent the Fraternity in a professional manner and to advance the goals of the Fraternity in a timely manner. District Governors are required to be 25 years of age at the time appointment, can expect a weekly time commitment of two to three hours a week, and will be expected to travel for seven weekends across the biennium. Committee Chairs do not have an age requirement, can expect a time commitment of up to 10 hours a month, and may be asked to commit one to three weekends a year to Fraternity work. More details on expectations, committees, and more can be found in the application. Brothers may apply to be a committee chair and District Governor; however, they will only be appointed to one position. The Application can be found here: 2025-2027 NLT Application (Appointed Positions)If you are interested in serving in one of the appointed 2025-2027 NLT positions please complete this form by March 1st.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. As this is a busy time of the Fraternal year, responses may be slightly delayed.

AEA,

Nic
