Brothers,
Welcome to another biennium! Welcome to another two years of Kappa Kappa Psi striving to be the world standard organization in the realm of college and university bands promoting excellence through dedicated service, leadership development, and a strong sense of Brotherhood.
We are starting this biennium strong after celebrating the Journey that President Bang Co led us through at our National Convention just a couple weeks ago. Our 2025 National Convention was an embodiment of all the joys this Brotherhood can afford. From the inaugural Intercollegiate Jazz Band, to celebrating our Ritual, to developing our members as leaders through the Founders’ Circle Leadership Development Program, and ultimately to the election and installation of our 2025-2027 National Leadership Team.
As we enter this next biennium, we have a lot of exciting work to do to advance the college band movement while preparing our members to be the best possible leaders they can be. As such, the vision for 2025-2027 is called “The AEA Way” and aims to advance Kappa Kappa Psi and its members. While the remainder of this newsletter could detail “The AEA Way,” we will instead focus on important updates from National Convention as well as upcoming opportunities for our active members to develop more as leaders.
2025 National Convention Updates. As with every National Convention, we discussed the future of the Fraternity while passing a variety of constitutional amendments and budgets to help us move forward as an Active Centered Organization. The full updated Constitution will be available in the upcoming months; however, we wanted to highlight these updates for you all now:
- A $15 dollars dues increase was approved by the national delegation to account for lower post pandemic membership numbers and an increased cost of living for our headquarters staff. This means that Annual dues will be $145 for returning members and $160 for newly initiated members.
- Alongside the increase in membership dues, we officially reduced our late fee from 25% to 10%.
- The Fraternity’s fiscal year for both our National Organization and Chapters is now from September 1st to August 31st.
- We have updated language around our Chapter Personnel Report saying that they are now due on September 1st and late after September 30th for semester based schools. For quarter based schools they will now be due on October 1st and late after November 15th. Please note, submissions made before the “late date” will still be considered on-time; however, no extensions will be provided after the late date.
- We have removed the language requiring recruitment to be in the spring unless there was an exemption by the Director of Bands or Sponsor. Please note that the Director of Bands and Sponsor still has to approve your recruitment and education calendar.
Thus, this is an important reminder that your Chapter Personnel Report will be due September 1st (for semester schools) with both the Chapter Fee ($100) and annual membership fees ($145 per person).
ChopShops. We are excited to say that we will be kicking off our Chapter Operation workshops, also known as ChopShops, in the upcoming weeks. These workshops are aimed at giving individual Brothers the opportunity to learn the basics of a variety of Chapter Offices and Planning while also providing the opportunity to engage with members of the National Leadership Team on questions they may have. Members do not have to hold the office for a given ChopShop and can attend as many as they want. Also, the ChopShops are the first opportunity for your Chapter to earn a Crown Pearl Goal this biennium! As long as one member from your Chapter attends at least one ChopShop – your Chapter will earn this goal!
Crown Pearl Goals. The Crown Pearl Goals are also returning for the 2025-2027 Biennium. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the Chapter Crown Pearl Goals are:
Chapter Operations | National Brand | Strive for Five |
|
|
|
Once again, we want to recognize Chapters who complete at least 10 of these 15 Goals as Crown Pearl Chapters. Last year we had 66 Chapters achieve this designation and we have no doubt that we could see 100 Chapters reach this designation this year. There are five early opportunities to earn a Crown Pearl this month including:
- Attending a ChopShop!
- Submitting your Chapter’s Curriculum Calendar!
- Submitting your Chapter’s Personnel Report and Dues!
- Create a plan with your Chapter DOB/Sponsor – Feel free to use the CHOPs resources for creating a calendar for the year and planning ahead for submitting your chapter’s paperwork.
- Sharing your Chapter’s budget with your District Council – If you need a starting budget, feel free to use the templates here.
If you complete some of the goals, like the Strive for Five goals, early in the calendar year, please use this link to submit supplemental materials. In our next newsletter we will be sharing the Crown Pearl Goals for our Council, Board of Trustees, Alumni Association, and more – while also sharing ways for your Chapter to earn Crown Pearl Goals for the National Month of Service.
National Support and Awards. While you all begin to plan out your year for growing your Chapters and supporting your band program, we wanted to flag the following programs that can be used to support both your Chapter and Band Program.
- The Chapter Development Grant Program provides up to $1000 to promote leadership and chapter operations training. Fall semester applications must be postmarked between August 1 and December 1
- The Leadership Grant Program provides up to $1000 to leadership development and skill training to Brothers and band programs; applications are approved on a rotating basis
- The Matching Grant Program provides up to $1000 to support obtaining guest conductors and performing artists for college/university bands. Fall semester applications must be postmarked between August 1 and December 1.
Volunteer and NLT Opportunities. Brothers, as we set upon our ambitious plan, we will still need help accomplishing our goals! Currently, we are soliciting participation in our committees, both active and alumni, as well as filling District Governor vacancies (due to our National Elections) in the North Central, Southeast, and Southwest Districts. Applications for each of those appointments can be found here:
We will keep these forms open, but a priority will be given to those who complete these forms by August 15th. Due to the “sprint model” our active centered committees are taking, we will re-open our call for volunteers throughout the year and biennium.
Brothers, I wanted to keep this newsletter short today to the most pressing concerns for our Chapters as you get ready to start your year as a Chapter and Band. I would be remiss though if I did not introduce the rest of our National Council. I am excited that this biennium I will be joined by:
- Marc Renaud as the National Vice President for Membership and Expansion (ZE Chapter, [email protected] )
- Arupa Gopal-Campbell as the National Vice President for Programs (KT Chapter, [email protected] )
- JP Davis as the National Vice President for Student Affairs (ZX Chapter, [email protected] )
- Dr. William L. Lake, Jr. as the National Vice President of Professional Relations (ΓΞ Chapter, [email protected] )
- Bang Co as the Immediate Past President (AZ Chapter, [email protected] )
- Evan Thompson as the Chair of the Board of Trustees (ZX Chapter, [email protected] )
- Brittany Biberston as the Chair of the Alumni Association Board of Directors (KB Chapter, [email protected] )
To say I am excited about working with this team of Brothers would be an understatement. I am thankful for their time and energies as we aim to progress Kappa Kappa Psi forward as an organization. I am also thankful to work with our expanded team throughout the biennium including our Vice-Chairs, District Governors, and Committee chairs as we complete our work “The AEA Way.”
Finally, I want to give thanks to President Bang T. Co for all his work as the 49th President of the Fraternity. The work and challenges of the last biennium were not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but Bang handled them with grace and a care for the people. In doing so, he helped us re-establish our Fraternity Brand. The work of Bang, his council, and his team has provided us a solid foundation for the biennium to come.
Brothers – I look forward to the work of the next biennium because our work is aimed at elevating the members of our great Fraternity to be better leaders and better people who can change the world. Being able to do this work with people who care so deeply is the honor of a lifetime. As always, please reach out to me or any other members of our National Council to let us know how we can best support you, your Chapters, and your Band Programs.
AEA, Always,
Dr. Nicholas A. Rorrer
Kappa Kappa Psi National President 2025-2027
