Headquarters Announcement

Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma learned on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 that Alan Bonner, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), National Executive Director, has been arrested in a larger action by the Stillwater Police Department. Effective immediately, both organizations have placed Col. Bonner on paid leave as we allow the legal process to take its course, and expect to cooperate fully with all aspects of any upcoming investigations.

The organizations are committed to take actions that are in congruence with our personnel policies, and look forward to the resolution of the issues at hand.

The organizations have appointed Diana Spiva, a longtime member of the National Headquarters staff, Interim Executive Director pending the outcome of these investigations.

Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma are each committed to the advancement of college bands, and our work on behalf of students and directors continues fully.

In Memoriam: Dale Croston

Brothers and Sisters,

It is with deep sadness and grief that we write to inform you of the passing of our friend, Brother, Sister, and Headquarters staff member, Dale Croston. Dale passed away Friday, September 27, 2013, surrounded by family and friends, from complications following surgery. This is a very sad time for our Headquarters Family, and all the Brothers and Sisters that knew and loved Dale. Our hearts and thoughts are with his wife Lisa, member of the TBS Board of Trustees, his son Jared, and the rest of the Croston family.

Dale served KKPsi and TBS as the National Chapter and Colony Education Coordinator. He is a life member of the Alpha Chapter at Oklahoma State University, and an Honorary Member of the KKPsi National Chapter, Southwest District, TBS National Chapter and the TBS Alpha Chapter. Dale loved our organizations very much, as epitomized through his recognition as a recipient of the J. Lee Burke Student Achievement Award, Stanley G. Finck Memorial Award and the A. Frank Martin Award. As a student leader, Dale helped his chapter achieve the William A. Scroggs Founder’s Trophy and the J. Lee Burke Trophy for best Chapter Display. Dale exemplifies those qualities held most sacred by both KKPsi and TBS.

Funeral services will be held Sunnybrook Church in Stillwater, OK on Friday, October 4 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you donate in Dale’s honor to the Boy Scouts of America and the KKPsi / TBS Headquarters Landscaping Fund.

Headquarters will run limited hours the week of Sept. 30 and will be closed Friday, October 4. If you have an immediate need, please contact your Governor/ Counselor.

Fraternally,

Christine Beason
KKPsi National President

Podium and Baton Indexing Project Announced

The Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma history and archives teams are excited to announce a project to index the joint publication of our organizations, the Podium. The Baton is the early year’s publication for Kappa Kappa Psi and is included in this indexing project.

The history of our organizations comes alive when you look back at older editions of the publications. As part of the process to document the history of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, we are embarking on this project now so that by 2019 we will be in the position to provide a documented history of our organizations.

If you would like to assist in this project, please contact Aaron Moore at hqacc@kkytbs.org. You will be able to do this indexing on your on time and schedule.

You will be asked what edition of the Podium or Baton you would like to index (possibly the years you were an active member). We will send you that edition as a PDF document, along with an Excel file to document the issue, instructions, and an example issue.

Thank you for supporting Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. We hope you will see the value in this project and commit to indexing one or more issues.

Star Memorial Recognition

Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi,

In 1947 at the National Convention in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the National Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi recognized members of Kappa Kappa Psi who were killed in action while serving our country during World War II. They created a memorial recognition knows as the Gold Star.

Prior to the 2007 National Convention, the national council was approached by Kappa Kappa Psi brother from Zeta Sigma and Kappa Epsilon, Danielle Adams-Davis.  Danielle asked the National Council what could be done to recognize current military members and brothers in 2007. The National Council at that time felt the national convention in Orlando would be an appropriate time to recognize members of Kappa Kappa Psi and our band family who have served our country. At the 2007 National Convention in Orlando, FL the National Council used the Gold Star recognition from 1947 to serve as inspiration to recognize brother and band members that are current military members or who have previously served their country.  Members were recognized in the following manner:

Gold Star Memorial for Brothers who have passed while serving our country with a memorial resolution from the national council.

Blue Star Recognition for Brothers who are currently serving our country or are veterans.

Silver Star Memorial for Band members who have passed while serving our country with a memorial resolution from the national council.

White Star Recognition for Band members who are currently serving our country or are veterans.

This biennium, the National Council will once again recognize members of our Kappa Kappa Psi and band families. If you have names you would like to submit to recognized this summer at National Convention in Springfield, MA please visit http://www.kkpsi.org/goldstar.asp and complete the online form.  You may also send me the following information by July 1, 2013 at lee.jack.d@gmail.com
