NATIONAL PRESIDENT
Malinda M. Matney, Ph.D.

Malinda M. Matney has been a part of the national leadership of Kappa Kappa Psi since 1992.  She served as National Vice President for Colonization and Membership from 2005-2007. Dr. Matney served as National Vice President for Programs from 1995-1997, as North Central District Governor from 1997 to 2005, and as Midwest District Governor from 1992-1995. Dr. Matney also serves as the Chapter Sponsor for Nu Chapter at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Matney is Senior Research Associate for the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Michigan, and has been with Student Affairs Research since 2000. Dr. Matney is also a Lecturer in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. In 2001, Dr. Matney earned her Ph.D. in Higher and Postsecondary Education from the University of Michigan. She also holds an Education Specialist degree in higher education administration from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, a Master of Music in Music History from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a bachelor's degree in music from Wichita State University. Her current work within the student affairs context involves both the assessment of program outcomes and the analysis of trends in student behaviors and expectations over time. This is an extension of Dr. Matney's dissertation focus on institutional and departmental factors affecting innovative teaching practices for faculty teaching undergraduates.

 

 

NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT FOR COLONIZATION AND MEMBERSHIP 
Derrick Mills

Derrick Mills was initiated into the Eta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at The Ohio State University in March 1995. He participated in several athletic bands at Ohio State and was a five-year member and assistant squad leader of The Ohio State University Marching Band. As an active member of Eta, Derrick served two terms as the chapter's historian. He also served as the 1996-1997 North Central District Vice President for Programs. Derrick served as National Vice President for Program from 2005-2007 and National Vice President for Student Affairs from 203-2005. Derrick graduated from Ohio State with a degree in Political Science in 1998. Derrick served Kappa Kappa Psi as its fifth National Chapter Field Representative from 2000-2002. In his time as CFR, Derrick visited with over 120 universities/chapters and attended several district conventions and fraternity conferences. He was selected by the sisters of Chi at OSU and the National Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma to be made an honorary member in 2001. Derrick is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Derrick currently resides in Columbus, Ohio, where he is a foreman for Page Construction. A general contracting company specializing in hospital remodeling, Page Construction has been in Derrick's family for over 35 years. Derrick is married to Emily Shoemaker, a sister of Tau Beta Sigma and they have a son James. Derrick is a member of the National Alumni Association, the North Central District Alumni Association, and the Ann Arbor Alumni Association. He is also a life member of Kappa Kappa Psi. His other interests include golf, Ohio State Buckeyes, and watching sports.

 


NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS
Adam Cantley

Adam Cantley was initiated in the Omicron Chapter of Kappa Kappa on March 20, 1999 at West Virginia University. He was a member of both marching band and concert band at West Virginia University. He served in various chapter offices and served three terms on the North East District Council for Kappa Kappa Psi, his last being president. Adam was also awarded the J. Lee Burke Student Achievement award in 2002. In the fall of 2003 he was asked to honorary member of the Gamma Omega Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at the University of Pittsburgh. Adam completed his education at WVU with a B.A. in Integrated Sciences/Biology and a M.A. in Secondary Education in May 2003. Adam served as National Vice President for Student Affairs from 205-2007. Adam served Kappa Kappa Psi as its sixth National Chapter Field Representative from 2003-2005. In his time as CFR, Adam visited with over 120 universities/chapters and attended several district conventions and fraternity conferences. He is an honorary member of several chapters and districts of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. At the national convention in Lexington Kentucky Adam received the honor of becoming an honorary member of the national chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Adam currently resides in Stillwater, Oklahoma where he works in the office of Student Affairs at Oklahoma State University and is working on a second master's degree in Educational Leadership and College Student Development. Adam is a member of the National Alumni Association, the NED Alumni Association, and the SWD Alumni Association. He is a life member of Kappa Kappa Psi. His other interests include college sports (Go Mountaineers and Go Pokes), Musical Theater, and playing in the Stillwater Community Band.

 

 

NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS
Jason Morris

Jason Morris was initiated into the Iota Lambda Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi on August 27, 2000 at Mount Union College. He was a member of the Purple Raider Marching Band, Concert Band, and Wind Symphony as well as various small ensembles. Jason completed his education at Mount Union in December 2003 earning a B.M.E., summa cum laude, with emphasis in percussion (marimba) and piano. After graduation, Jason has continued to serve the fraternity as a chapter sponsor, colony advising person, and as a resource to chapters. Jason served for four years within the Office of Student Affairs at Mount Union College where he worked with leadership and residential programming as well as student development. He currently resides in Canton, Ohio where he works as one of three Directors of Bands for the Fairless Local Schools and is active in Freemasonry, where in addition to being a raised Master Mason, he holds the 32nd degree from the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite. Jason is a life member of Kappa Kappa Psi and holds memberships in Pi Kappa Lambda, Mu Phi Epsilon, the National Association for Music Education (MENC), the Ohio Music Education Association, and the Society for Research in Music
Education. His other interests include college sports, playing golf and soccer whenever he can, and musical theatre.

 

 

NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROFESSIONAL RELATIONS
Dr. Bruce Moss

Bruce Moss, professor of music education and director of band activities at BGSU since 1994, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois. Prior to completing his doctorate in music education at Ohio State University, he served as chairman of the music department and director of bands at the York Community High School in Elmhurst, Ill., for 11 years. His many years of public school teaching were honored in 1986 when he served as co-conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with Leonard Slatkin, in a special work featuring his high school students. University and high school ensembles under his direction have performed at both state and national conventions, as well as major high schools and universities throughout Canada and the United States.

Moss is also a new music reviewer for The Instrumentalist magazine. Since 1980, he has been music director of the Wheaton Municipal Band in Illinois, a professional summer community ensemble that is regarded as one of the finest of its kind in the nation. This organization was recently featured in the WGBH-TV Public Broadcasting Service’s American Experience documentary, “If You Knew Sousa.” In addition, he organized and conducted a professional wind ensemble for the College of DuPage and has taught courses at Elmhurst College, the University of Illinois, Ohio State University, the University of Iowa and VanderCook College of Music. Recently elected to the American Bandmasters Association, he holds memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the American School Band Directors Association, the National Band Association, the Ohio Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference and several professional music fraternities.



IMMEDIATE PAST NATIONAL PRESIDENT
Dr. Rod Chesnutt

Rod M. Chesnutt is chair of the Division of Ensembles and Conducting and director of Symphonic and Marching bands at the University of Northern Iowa. He is responsible for those components of the university band program while teaching courses in music education, wind literature and conducting. He holds a bachelor's degree in music education from Tennessee Technological University, a master's degree in trombone performance from Arkansas State University, and a Ph.D. in music education with an emphasis in wind conducting from Florida State University. Previously, he was the director of bands at Mississippi State University and the State University of West Georgia. Additionally, he served as Music Director/Conductor of the Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra and served as the assistant director of bands and the director of the Cornhusker Marching Band at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska, the Cornhusker Marching Band received the Sudler Trophy for outstanding contributions among the nation's university bands. Prior to teaching at the university level, Dr. Chesnutt built superior-rated bands in the public schools of Trumann and Blytheville, Arkansas. He was recognized as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1988 and received the National Music Clubs' Award of Merit in 1991. He has been selected as a Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Education.

As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Chesnutt has appeared throughout the United States. He is also an arranger of note having studied with Robert Jager and Jared Spears and his arrangements have been performed by such accomplished ensembles as the U.S. Army Band [Pershing's Own], New Columbia Wind Band, Florida State University Symphonic Band, Syracuse University Wind Ensemble and the University of Nebraska Wind Ensemble. Professionally, he is a member of Music Educators National Conference, College Band Directors National Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Mississippi Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the National Band Association. A past Arkansas State Chairman for the NBA and Mississippi State Chair for the CBDNA, Dr. Chesnutt is a former Midwest and Southeast District Governor for Kappa Kappa Psi and served as its National President from 2005-2007. He has conducted ensembles and presented scholarly research at regional, national, and international conventions, and his articles have been published in CBDNA Reports, Journal of Band Research, The Instrumentalist, the NBA Journal, and Clarino Bläsermusik International. He is a contributor to the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series.
