1. Race for the Cure T-Shirts Order Form Available
On-Line
As a remidner of the previous announcement in the
last issue of NewNotes On-Line, Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma have
united in their support for Dixie Mosier-Greene, National Headquarters
Administrator, and her fight against breat cancer. The National
Councils urge chapters across the nation to do the same!
Over the course of each year, most major cities
host the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation "Race for the
Cure". This race is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks
around the world. Money raised goes towards funding research and increasing
awareness of breast cancer.
The national councils are challenging each chapter
to become involved in their local race for the cure in support of Dixie.
Information on race dates can be found at www.raceforthecure.com
Order information for T-Shirts is now available on
the National Website at http://www.kkytbs.org/forms/TShirtOrderForm.pdf.
You may also find this address under a new listing at "New and Noteworthy"on
the left-hand side of the home page. This is colored red so as to stand out
from the rest of the items. The first item in this heading is a link to
the "Race for the Cure" t-shirt order form. A portion of each
sale will be donated towards breast cancer research. They would be an
excellent choice for the chapter to wear on race day!
Watch new notes and the listserve for more
announcements on this project!
2. Headquarters
Needs to Know Your Unique Community Service Projects
The National Headquarters is compiling a list of
unique and innovative service projects that our chapters have been involved in
across the country. This list will be very helpful to us as we seek
funding through grants and other external sources during this biennium and in
the future. Though we’ve attempted to compile this list using existing HQ
data( Chapter Summary Reports, Service Certificate applications, etc.), we have
not gathered as many ideas as we would like.
We would like to show corporations and foundations
what our members are doing so that they might consider funding Kappa Kappa Psi
and Tau Beta Sigma, now and in the future. Therefore, I am asking for
your help.
To assist you in better understanding what I'm
looking for, I've provided a few examples of some creative, unique
community/service projects that put KKPsi & TBS in a very positive light
with Foundations that offer grant funding.
Example #1 from the Theta Nu Chapter of Tau Beta
Sigma, Clark
Atlanta University
“Tenatious Teens:” Little sister program developed in partnership with
a local high school designed to encourage young women to excel in music and
academically while participating in worthwhile projects. Members serve as
mentors and peer leaders to the high school students.
Example #2 from the Upsilon Chapter of Kappa
Kappa Psi, University of Cincinnati
Financial
Support for a Local High School Band: The chapter raised money to support the Deer Park High School Band, which was struggling to raise a large sum of
money necessary for a band trip to a competition in Florida, the first trip this band had attempted. The Upsilon
Chapter was able to present the high school band with a check representing the
entire proceeds from a fundraising opportunity at Cincinnati’s annual Oktoberfest celebration.
Example #3 from the Lambda Chapter of Tau Beta
Sigma, The University of Michigan:
“Mott’s Children’s Hospital: (service, community)
Continuing with our community service initiative, we performed a small concert
for patients and their families at Mott’s Children’s Hospital on April
10. We first met at Revelli Hall to run through some younger tunes from
the past marching seasons. Clad in Michigan gear, we headed to the hospital and set up in the
lobby. We played the usual Michigan favorites and some selections from this year’s
shows. We also took time during the concert to introduce each of the
instruments and play a short solo. From the huge smiles on their faces,
you could tell the patients and families enjoyed our visit. We also hung
around after the concert to talk to the children and have them try out our
instruments. We plan to increase the number of visits next year in
accordance with the new community service initiative.”
Please tell us about your special service
activities! You may email your project descriptions to me at hqned@kkytbs.org. Please
tell me what the project name is, who it benefits (or benefited), when you
did the project (or are planning to do the project), if it is ongoing, where
you did (or are going to do ) the project, why you did it (or are doing it),
and how you did (if it is still being planned, you can omit this item).
Please add any other information you think would be useful! The more
explicit you can be, the better!
2. Step Up
to The Service Showcase — Earn $200.00 For Your College or University Band
by Michelle Kincheloe, National Vice President for Programs for Kappa
Kappa Psi
Showcase Your Chapter Service to Bands by submitting
an application for your chapter for the Service Showcase! ! ! In concert with
Kappa Kappa Psi being a student run organization, the National Council is
counting on each District to select an outstanding Kappa Kappa Psi service project
to bands at your upcoming District Convention. The top selection in each
District will be forwarded by your District President to Michelle Kincheloe,
National Vice President for Programs, for national consideration and possible
publication in the Kappa Kappa Psi Service Showcase. This professional
publication will be sent to all chapters, sponsors and directors of bands
across the country. The publication will be mailed (tentatively) in the fall,
2004. In addition, a check for $200 will be awarded to the band program of each
chapter selected for publication. Up to one service project from each District
may be selected for publication. All nationally selected project's chapter,
sponsor and director of bands will be informed of their selection in July/early
August, 2004 following the meeting of the National Council.
Requirements:
• The Kappa Kappa Psi chapter submitting their application must have
met all of their national obligations for the current year.
• The project must be a service project that has a positive impact on
the band programs. (Adopt a Highway, fundraising for other charities, working
for Habitat for Humanity, etc. will not be considered for this program.) Some
things to consider are band service projects that any chapter can do, projects that
have a lasting impact on the success of the band programs, projects which
enhance the bands in creative ways.
• A one-page submission which includes band profile, picture and text
regarding the project will be submitted to your District President who will
then forward it to the appropriate committee for selection.
• Your District President must receive your chapter's Service Showcase
submission by the opening gavel of your District Convention.
• Each District has developed its own selection criteria over the past
two years.
• Final selection for publication will be made by the National Council
of Kappa Kappa Psi.
ATTN:
District Governors/Counselors/Officers/Chapter Presidents...
Please ensure widest possible delivery to all chapters,
colonies & members in your respective districts!
The
idea of this electronic newsletter is to be able to quickly and efficiently
send out information to every individual member. Therefore, it is up to
the District Leaders to designate someone to be responsible for forwarding
on to the chapters or Chapter Presidents in their district. Once the
Chapter Presidents have the newsletter, please ensure every member of your
chapter receives it! Unfortunately, I regularly talk to chapters members
who have do not received NewsNotes On-Line. Please help us to communicate
to the individual member!
All
