KKPsi & TBS Sponsor Travel Scholarship for
Conn-Selmer University 2003
by Lt Col Alan Bonner, National
Executive Director
On behalf of the National Councils
of KKPsi & TBS, I am pleased to announce that
both organizations will provide one travel
scholarship each, up to $200, for the first
member of the Fraternity and the first member of
the Sorority that is accepted into either session
of Conn-Selmer University 2003. Conn-Selmer
University is a relatively new, innovative
program designed to assist new teachers in the
field of music education. The program consists of
a 3.5 day session and is held in Elkhart,
Indiana. More information about Conn-Selmer
University is available in the article that
follows below.
Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Director of Education for
Conn-Selmer Inc., is one of the nationally
renowned educators involved in this program, and
he contacted the National Headquarters to
encourage our members to consider applying for
one of the summer sessions. Those of you at the
2001 National Convention in Corpus Christi will
recall Dr. Lautzenheiser's exciting presentations
to one of our Joint Sessions and two separate
sessions to both KKPsi & TBS. He is one of
the most electrifying speakers you will ever
hear, and the opportunity to spend concentrated
time with him very well may change your life!
If you are a graduating music education major,
graduating music business major, future school
music service representative, or a music educator
in your first years of teaching, give this
program some serious consideration. The cost is
certainly minimal, especially if you are the
first member of KKPsi or first member of TBS
selected. Even if you don't qualify for the
special travel scholarship from the Fraternity or
Sorority, Conn-Selmer makes this program
incredibly affordable. Read the article below and
if you feel this would benefit you, contact
Carolyn Manley at her contact information below!
In order to ensure we have correct information as
to whom is actually the first recipient, any
applicant for the $200 travel scholarship from
KKPsi or TBS must provide documentation to the
KKPsi & TBS National Headquarters, as to when
you submitted your application to Conn-Selmer
University. If you are selected as a recipient,
please notify Lt Col Alan Bonner, National
Executive Director at hqned@kkytbs.org!
Good luck!
Three
Days That Will Change Your Future
Conn-Selmer
University 2003
Recent graduates
of Conn-Selmer University are raving about the
program hosted by Conn-Selmer Inc. in Elkhart,
Indiana. I cannot tell you how beneficial
Selmer University was for me. It was the single
best thing I have done for my career to date. I
feel every music education major in the country
needs to attend. These are the words of
Matt McVeigh, a student from the University of
Wisconsin who was a participant in Selmer
University 2002. His sentiments are often
repeated by other alumni of this program; the
opportunity to attend Conn-Selmer University 2003
shouldnt be missed!
Conn-Selmer University 2003 is the fifth year of
the program originally known as Selmer
University. Designed to assist graduating music
education majors transition into their first
teaching jobs, this program has also proven
beneficial for music business majors and school
music service representatives, as well as for any
music educators within their first years of
teaching.
The Conn-Selmer Company provides this program to
encourage and motivate professionals choosing to
work within the field of music education. Supporting
music educators is a direct way to ensure the
benefits of music making continue to be valued as
a priority of the American education system,
says Carolyn Manley, Director of Conn-Selmer
University. Many first year music teachers feel
overwhelmed by unexpected components of their
jobs and eventually decide to leave the
profession. Conn-Selmer University condenses the
strategies and experiences of master educators
into three days of high-energy interactive
sessions, enabling new teachers to begin working
with the confidence and knowledge that
traditionally takes years to acquire.
Conn-Selmer University 2003 is the first year the
program is enhanced by the collaboration of MENC
The National Association for Music
Education. This collaboration, combined with the
sponsorship of other industry partners, allows
Conn-Selmer Inc. to host this program in Elkhart,
Indiana at a cost of only $50.00 for each
participant. The expenses for room, meals and
transportation while in Elkhart are provided by
Conn-Selmer Inc. with assistance from The Hal
Leonard Corporation, Festivals of Music, Marching
Show Concepts, NAMM The International
Music Products Association, and MENC The
National Association of Music Educators.
Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Director of Education for
Conn-Selmer Inc., is one of the nationally
renowned educators who communicates his
enthusiasm for the profession of music education
and music advocacy during Conn-Selmer University
sessions. Dr. Tim is joined by university
professors, public school music administrators,
school music dealers, clinicians and product
specialists from Conn-Selmer Inc. to contribute
their special expertise to the goals of
Conn-Selmer University. Panel discussions,
question and answer sessions, and breaks
throughout the day provide opportunities for
participants to meet and talk with each
presenter.
Participants of Conn-Selmer University will begin
their careers with a network of mentors and
colleagues to rely on while navigating the first
years of teaching. Special guests of Conn-Selmer
University 2003 include Dr. Charles Menghini,
Dean of Undergraduate Studies at VanderCook
College; Marcia Neel, Music Supervisor for Clark
County, Nevada; Jim Slutz, Director of Music
Business at Indiana State University; Dr. Willie
Hill, MENC President; and Mel Clayton, Past
President of MENC.
Of special note is the fact that some colleges
and universities, CMENC chapters, and members of
the Conn-Selmer dealer network consider
Conn-Selmer University to be of such value they
assist with registration fees and transportation
costs for participants in the Conn-Selmer
University program.
Session One begins on Monday, May 19 and
concludes at noon on Thursday, May 22. Session
Two begins on Monday, June 16 and concludes at
noon on Thursday, June 19. The curriculum is the
same for both sessions.
