1. KKPsi & TBS Special Commission Generates Support Around the Nation
by Lt Col Alan Bonner, National Executive Director

The October 15th announcement of the KKPsi & TBS Special Commission by Donald Grantham to Commemorate the "Lives Lost, Heroes Found, and the Enduring Spirit of America" after the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center & Pentagon has been well received by university directors around the nation.

I thought university directors should know of this important national, special program, so I sent an announcement on behalf of KKPsi & TBS to CBDNA members in the CBDNA email address book. The response was heartwarming, supportive, and most encouraging. I also thought our membership should be made aware of some of the positive notes I had received from all over the country, and I've included a few for your reading. Some came from universities and colleges where we do not even have a presence, and that, too is exciting.

a. From Cody Birdwell, Director of Bands at Texas Tech University:"Bravo!! Thanks to all of you for doing this!!"

b. From Kevin Mayse, Director of Concert Bands at Riverside Community College: "The Riverside Community College Wind Ensemble would be proud to contribute to this project."

c. From James Hudson, Director of Bands and Chapter Sponsor, Southwest Texas State: "You can count on Southwest Texas State (Theta Alpha) to be involved."

d. From Rob Dunham, Chair of the CSU San Bernardino Music Department: "This is wonderful and very worthy of support. The CSUSB music department WILL contribute to this project. Thanks for acting in a very positive and timely way."

e. From Allan McMurray, Director of Bands at the University of Colorado: "Congratulations on a very worthwhile project. I am delighted that KKY/TBS has secured a composer of Donald Grantham's stature."

f. From Robert Halseth, Director of Wind Studies at CSU Sacramento and President of the Western Division of CBDNA: "Bravo... to Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, for moving quickly to get this work done. I will urge Western Division membership to support this commission."

To all chapter presidents: I encourage you and your members to talk to your Directors about this special project. As was reported in theoriginal announcement last month, "KKPsi National President Kirk Randazzo and TBS National President Sylvia Halbardier made it clear that this project is one that belongs to all of our members, and they encourage every single chapter to participate in raising funds to reach our goal of $10,000 to fund this commission. All KKPsi & TBS chapters are invited to send contributions to the National Headquarters and earmarked, "KKPsi & TBS Special Commission Fund". If all chapters are able to contribute even a small amount, this commission truly will represent all of us in a very unique way!

3. Brass Players Take Note!
by Lt Col Alan Bonner, National Executive Director

I received the following email from Paul Jackson who asked that I pass along information concerning an important CD-ROM version of "Pioneers in Brass" by Glenn D. Bridges. I've not had the opportunity to review the material, but it appears to be a terrific resource and historical look at many of the legends in the brass world over the past century. If this interests you, check out the website quoted in Mr. Jackson's note below:

"Having been a member of Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity, I was able to get the national organization to send information about this important book to the local chapters. I'm wondering if I could get your support in doing the same for Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma .

I've republished my uncle's book, long out-of-print, Pioneers in Brass by Glenn D. Bridges in a CD-ROM format. This has allowed additional materials published by Glenn as well as some musical examples of the personnel profiled to be included. It includes all material from the various renderings of the 1972 edition and Herbert Clarke lectures, published by Glenn in 1970. It also includes a section on women brass players. You can read about and order this new edition from www.bookbay.com/PioneersInBrass.htm.

The CD-ROM works with JAWS software for the cited and with Windows enabled MACs. Those who are members of the International Trombone Association (ITA) may buy direct from them at a discount. Trade discounts are available to the trade, book stores, and Libraries are given a 35% discount via Book Bay...

...Thanks so much for your consideration and support."
