Developing the History of Commissions by KKPsi
& TBS
by Lt
Col Alan L. Bonner, USAF (Ret.), National
Executive Director
It is
clear that there has been a growing interest
throughout KKPsi &
TBS the past several years to create new band
literature through
commissions. Currently, there are several
districts with commission
projects or on-going programs. As such, I
feel it would be very
informative if we could document the commissions
KKPsi &/or TBS have
helped create, regardless whether at the district
or chapter level.
When added to our national commissioning program,
it substantiates an
incredible contribution to the growth of bands
and repertoire.
Therefore, I am seeking your assistance.
I
would like to create an article to publicize our
commitment to
commissioning, and to do so, I would ask that
Districts and Chapters
research their records, talk to their sponsors
& directors, contact
alumni, and even seek out retired band faculty to
determine what pieces
(if any) have you commissioned. Because I
would want these works to be
available to any director so interested, please
limit your input to
published works.
To
keep a consistent format, provide your
information as follows:
I.
Group responsible for the Commission (District or
Chapter)
1. Name of piece
2. Composer
3. Year Commissioned
4. Date premiered (if known)
5. Premiere performance by (if known)
6. Publisher
7. Reason for commission (if known)
8. Any other relevant information
This
will take some time to develop, but I do feel it
would be an
important demonstration to directors around the
nation, as to the
significance of our contribution to band programs
and literature.
District
leaders, please ask one of your officers to take
on this
project as far as developing information from
your district, ensuring
all chapters in your district are aware of this
request for information,
and ensure it is forwarded directly to the
National Executive Director
via email at hqned@kkytbs.org or via US Postal
Service to PO Box 849,
Stillwater, OK, 74076.
